The senior high school head coach is responsible for the organization, administration and implementation of the program in his or her specific sport. He or she has the responsibility to instruct the athletes under his or her charge in fundamental techniques and physical training necessary for athletes to meet with some degree of success in that sport, be it on an individual or on a team basis. He or she must work closely with his or her staff and the student activities coordinator towards the aforementioned goal.
The duties and responsibilities of the head coach also include the following:
1. Delegating responsibilities and assignments to assistant coaches.
2. Supervising and controlling the conduct of athletes under his or her charge before, during and after all sporting events and practice sessions.
3. Supervising staff conduct during all sports events and practice sessions and exemplifying by his or her own conduct a desirable example of good sportsmanship.
4. Executing proper procedures in handling an athlete injured while under his or her charge.
5. Having an understanding and knowledge of rules and regulations regarding athletics as presented in the VHSL handbook in order to implement the existing rules and regulations as set forth by the VHSL and the National Federation.
6. Being responsible for physical exams and insurance or waiver forms.
7. Submitting budget recommendations and purchase requisitions to the Student Activities Coordinator.
8. Maintaining records of team and individual accomplishments.
9. Assisting the Student Activities Coordinator in regards to care and inventory of equipment, eligibility and scheduling of contests.
10. Issue and collect all uniforms and equipment and maintain accurate records of the aforementioned items.
11. Being responsible for the storage, care, and inventory of all uniforms and equipment from the time that they are checked out until they are turned into the Student Activities Coordinator.
12. Adhering to any additional duties and guidelines as set forth by the Student Activities Coordinator and Principal.
13. Work harmoniously with coaches of other sports.
14. Promote positive relations in the school and community.
Junior Varsity Coach/Assistant Coach/Volunteer Coach
The senior high school Junior Varsity/Assistant/Volunteer Coach shall assist the Head Coach in organization, administration and implementation of a purposeful program in his or her specific sport. He or she shall assist the Head Coach in instructing the athletes in the fundamental techniques and physical training necessary in his or her sport. The Junior Varsity Coach will oversee the operation of the Junior Varsity program and work with the Varsity Coach as needed. The Assistant/Junior Varsity/Volunteer Coach is directly responsible to the Head Coach. He or she is expected to perform those duties assigned to him or her by the Head Coach.
The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant/Junior Varsity/Volunteer Coach also include the following:
1. Have an understanding and knowledge of rules and regulations regarding athletics as presented in the VHSL handbook in order to implement the existing rules and regulations as set forth by the VHSL and the National Federation.
2. Adhere to any additional duties and guidelines as set forth by Virginia Beach City Public Schools, the building Principal, or the Student Activities Coordinator.
3. Set a desirable example of good sportsmanship.
Non-School Employee(s)
