Community kitchen

The building of our community kitchen started in January 2014. And since then our team has continuously re-designed and improved the layout and features, so that it functional, spacious and homely. All materials are sourced sustainably and most are recycled from the local area. For example, the sun dried bricks used to build the kitchen area are from our neighbours old house, which they no longer wanted. The poles used to build the roof are sourced from the Belipola land. And the grass roof is sourced from the hills in and around the village. The kitchen was built by our Arboretum & Operations Team, using the design and guidance of Sion.

The Kitchen & Processing Team manage the kitchen area by organising the daily lunches, shopping lists, food menu for trainings and groups and ensures there is a high quality of food preparation and beautiful dining area.

The Belipola kitchen prepares only vegetarian meals. This is better for the environment, healthier for people and more cost efficient. Many of our guests, volunteers and some staff are also vegetarian, so we can manage expectations well. At times we use eggs and dairy products, such as buffalo curd and cheese. Our suppliers can be found here.
