Signs & database

We identified 160 species of plants and trees from Sri Lanka and around the world at Belipola. From this list, our intern from Sabaragamuwa University, Thamindu, created a database with 21 fields of information, related to each specie. With information, Thamindu, made tree tags, with the common name (in English and Sinhala), and scientific name. We are missing the common names in Tamil. This is a gap that has to be completed, with a Tamil speaker familiar in plant biology.

The 2014 database can be found below, as well as initial notes for designing and inputing the tree tags. Other databases can be seen here. An old RRI master database that was lost can be seen here (in excel format).

We also had an idea to create a booklet with all the species identified, their pictures, scientific information and uses. An example of what a page in the booklet could look like can also be found below.

The next task that has to be done, is a further identification of plants and trees at Belipola and continuation of the database, with common names in all 3 languages (English, Sinhala and Tamil). We believe that the list could go up to 400 and beyond. This could be source for another internship, from a local or international university.
