There are several tools that can help teachers keep a schedule for the day using picture images: the UDLtoolkit site (see Great Weblinks page) provides many examples of websites and programs that will allow for this.
Here I focus on three excellent ways to use technology to help structure the ASD student's day, keep them from getting frustrated with changes in activity by showing them visually what will happen during their day and finally, ways to visually demonstrate the pieces of the task in situations like Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) when they need more complicated tasks broken down into 'chunks'.
These tools include the ipod app iprompt, developed by Dan Tedesco, dad of an autistic child, SymTrend webbased and mobile software for Behavior management, Vsked (Visual Schedule) and finally Video Modeling (see links to individual pages below).
One other 'scheduling' tool for use on the ipod can be found http://joeschedule.com/ijoe.htm
You need to sign in to the tool at http://joeschedule.com/ (A one year subscription to the site is only $30.00)
