The second beast, the False Prophet, performs great signs so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men (Rev.13:11-13). Weapons of mass destruction like nuclear bombs and missiles were invented during the last 5-6 decades. Atom bombs were used for the first time on the cities of Hiroshima and Nakashagi in Japan during the second world war. Any ruler who makes fire come down from heaven to destroy his enemy is not following Christ but the Antichrist. He deceives those who dwell on the earth by signs and lying wonders (Rev.13:13). He makes an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. The false prophet through his false doctrines which are contrary to the Word, the truth, makes an image to the beast (the Devil). This image is not literally a statute or an idol. If an image of Satan is raised up in any corner of the world, the people would not be deceived. Here, an image means a system that advocates peace through the sword or the gun and that is opposed to the very doctrines of Christ. The religions of this world advocate that peace in this world can be attained by destroying the wrong-doers or the evil men. Even some Christian nations also advocated and pursued the theory of world peace by spilling the blood of their enemy nation. This is quite repugnant to the truth of the gospel that peace is available to the fallen human race only through the Blood of Jesus Christ and that we should love, and not hate our enemies.
The False Prophet gets power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image to be killed. A time would come when the False Prophet through his emissaries would cause persecution of the true people of God who would not believe in the doctrines of Satan or the Antichrist.
He gives a mark on the right hand or on the foreheads of all people, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, so that no one may buy or sell except those who have such a mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name, which is the number of a man (666). Of late, it was reported in the media that in Japan electronic chips were inserted in the foreheads of some people. The international credit cards and similar other types of computer-related marketing devices are some of the examples in this regard.
The number need not be literally 666 numericals. All the numericals were invented by men. Let us note that it is the number of a man.
“Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man: and his number is Six hundred threescore and six” (Rev.13:18). It is the number of a man. It cannot be a numerical figure in a literal sense. This peculiar number ‘666’ shows the peculiar character of the Antichrist. It is the number of deception. He deceives any man. He adopts different methods in deceiving the people of God. He does not work in a stereotype manner. He works with sharp intellectual traits.
Three idols form his visible image i.e. god of religions, god of materialism and god of power.
Three are his functions i.e. duplication, deceit and destruction.
Three are his manifestations i.e. abominations, blasphemy and unrighteousness.
