May 10, 2020 (Mother’s Day, John 14:1-6) Homily by Fr. Karl Schray

I remember a story about an elderly man who was very sick in the hospital.

His grandson comes one Sunday afternoon to visit him

on the way home from Sunday School and has his Bible with him.

The boy says, “Grandpa, we just read the best passage in the Bible.”

‘And what was that?’ asked Grandpa.

The boy opens his Bible to this very passage and he reads Jesus’ words:

Do not let your hearts be troubled.

You have faith in God, have faith also in me.

In my Father’s house, there are many dwelling places.

If there were not, would I have told you

that I am going to prepare a place for you?” The youngster asked:

Grandpa, Don’t you think that is the most beautiful thing,

that Jesus is preparing a place for us in Heaven?”

The grandfather says, ‘That is very wonderful.

But I think there is an even better passage in the Bible.’

The youngster’s eyes got big and he asked, “What is that?”

Grandpa said, ‘Read the next sentence.’

So, the boy read the next sentence,

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again

and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.”

See, Jesus not only prepares a place for us—

he takes us there when our time comes. So accept God’s love and be

ready.

A funny Mother’s Day story:

A woman was out walking with her 4 yr old daughter.

She picked up something off the ground and started to put it in her mouth.

The mom took the item away and asked her not to do that.

“Why?” her daughter asked.

‘Because it’s been on the ground, you don’t know where it’s been,

it’s dirty and probably has germs.’

At this point, the daughter looked at her with total admiration and asked,

“Momma, how do you know all this stuff? You are so smart.”

Mom said, ‘All moms know this stuff. It’s on the Mom Test.

You have to know it or they don’t let you be a mom.’

They walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes—

then the little girl said, “Oh…I get it!”

She beamed. “So, if you don’t pass the test, you have to be the dad.”

Mom said, ‘Exactly!’

What is the greatest gift a mother can give her children?

I believe it is the power of mothers praying for their children. S

Don’t miss praying together at meals and bedtime.

Pray for them when they are young and when they are adults.

The same goes for us men.

We can’t do better than to pray for our children daily.

Pray for what you and God know they need for salvation and character.

Let’s kneel and each pray silently for our children and grandchildren.

Say to Jesus silently each of their names.
