March 15, 2020 Homily by Fr. Karl Schray

There is a story about a man who once visited a monastery.

During his visit, he asked one of the monks,

“What is your greatest regret in life?” The monk replied,

“My greatest regret is never having become Christ.” The man asked,

‘How is that possible?’ Are we supposed to become Christ?

The monk responded: “No distance.”

Lent is a prayerful time to reflect on where our lives are and to assess, evaluate, examine our relationship with our God.

Lent is a journey by which we seek to become closer to our God

through practices of self-denial, prayer and generosity.

For it was Christ himself, who through his life of self-denial,

prayer and generosity offered his life for ours.

During Lent, then, we imitate him so that we can come closer to him.

As we continue this Lenten journey, this is also an opportunity for each of

us to reflect on our own call, as Christians, to grow closer to God.

We are invited to reflect on ways that we can bridge the divide that

separates us from closer communion with God and one another.

May we allow the ashes we prayerfully received on our foreheads

to be a reminder that we belong to God and it is to God we return.

Allow this Lenten journey to be a time to seek closer relationship

with Christ Jesus. Seek no distance.
