June 21, 2020 Homily by Fr. Karl Schray

Three times in today’s short Gospel, we are told not to be afraid.

I say ‘we’ because in our own day, we take on the job of messengers for Christ

which the apostles started. What our Lord told the twelve in the quiet

of their private conversation (in the darkness so to speak), they will have to proclaim in the full light of day. That is why

I think we should listen to the words we read and hear in our Sunday Mass, apply

them to ourselves and put them into practice in the light of the days to follow.

So often when our thoughts should be on the good news, they are miles away on other things. Listen carefully to the words and one of these days you will say

to yourself, ‘I think that means me.’

When it does, you will be taking something away from Mass with you.

Today’s Gospel ends with the guarantee that if anyone declares himself for Christ in the presence of people,

then Christ will vouch for him before his Father in heaven.

On the other hand, anyone who disowns Christ before others,

will be disowned by him before his heavenly Father.

In the early Church men and women faced suffering and death

rather than be disloyal to Christ. We may not be asked to die, but perhaps these days there is an even greater need to be loyal to Christ.

The enemy now is indifference. We describe this group as the Nones. They have no religion and no interest in faith or a Faith Community. They seem to have the world at their feet but no sign of God at their back.

Give us the grace to be doers of your word, not only hearers. Not only to admire your doctrine but to obey it. Not only to believe your religion

but to practice it. Not only to love your Gospel but to live it. Amen.

Happy Father’s Day all you Dads.

Gino, a Sicilian, said “Padre, When my wife an I got married long time ago,

we knew we had to learn to communicate, That would be very important. So I said to the missus: you be in charge of all the small decisions, honey,

and I’ll be in charge of all the big decisions.

Padre, I can tell you there have not been any big decisions.
