March 31, 2019 Homily by Fr. Karl Schray

What the Pharisees couldn’t or wouldn’t see, was that our Lord’s miracles,

including the cure of the blind man,

were definite indications that he was the Messiah sent by God.

They couldn’t or wouldn’t see it, because they didn’t want to.

Do we want to?

In the battle of wits between the blind man and the Pharisees,

in the choice we’re given between seeing and not seeing,

there’s no doubt where our sympathies lie. Yet

we may have our blind spots, too. What’s your blind spot? And mine?

Is it some aspect of Christ’s teaching—

about justice or honesty, purity or forgiveness?

Some sin we prefer not to see? A hardening of the heart? Or perhaps

antagonism towards a neighbor or people who are different than us?

Or indifference to the poor?

Could it be we have Jesus safely tucked away

in the tabernacle of our lives?

The Gospel today wants us to have our eyes examined—

so that we can see the Lord more clearly and His plans for our conversion.

Don’t be spiritually blind. Behave as children of the light.

Let us pray that we are cured of our blindness.

Our prayer—Lord, that I may see.
