November 22, 2020 Homily by Fr. Karl Schray

Do you remember the story of St. Martin of Tours?

He was military officer in the Roman army. It is said that one day at the city

gates, he saw an old beggar, half-naked and shivering in the winter cold.

So, cutting his own cloak in two, he gave the beggar half of it.

The following night, he had a vision of Our Lord wearing the half-cloak.

This same sobering message is told in today’s Gospel.

In giving to others, we give to Christ.”

I have only one word of advice for you, and for myself,

and it is something we should take very much to heart:

Let’s be as good as we can to the sick.

Let’s be as helpful as we can to the stranger.

Let’s be as generous as we can to the poor.

Let’s be supportive always of the victims of injustice and oppression.

Let’s give as much as we can to the victims of starvation and drought.

And let us know in absolute certainty that we do all these things to Christ.

Let us know that in doing them, we recognize Christ as our King

and are striving to be full citizens of his Kingdom.

Today’s Gospel may make us a little uncomfortable.

However, we have no need to be uncomfortable

about the Judgment itself,

if our every day is Judgment Day and

if we give our lives to others in works of mercy.
