Feb 9, 2020 Homily by Fr. Karl Schray

It is almost impossible for me not to think of myself as just one person.

Our English language is a part of the problem

because we use ‘you’ in the singular and the plural.

If I read ‘you’ in Scripture as referring just to me as an individual, then

I can readily think that ‘it is all about me’ and I alone am the good news.

But if we read Scripture in the plural, then we immediately see the

communal call to live in relationship with those on the margins of society.

When we know our interconnectedness and that we are all part of the

problem and the solution, then the Spirit can shine in our lives and world.

In calling us salt and light, Jesus is praising us

by telling us we have talents and gifts

that could be of great value and help to others.

Sometimes we are called to do big things to help others

and sometimes it’s the little day-to-day acts of kindness

that are important.

Whatever we do to help another

is going to bring blessings back to us.
