Oct 11, 2020 Homily by Fr. Karl Schray

Weddings were such an important event in Jesus’ day that

people were expected to wear the proper clothing to show appreciation and

respect for the invitation.

Special outfits were given to those who could not afford to buy their own.

Along with last week’s parable of the landlord and the wicked tenants,

this Gospel is a tale of our salvation history. Will we accept or reject

God’s invitation? Or worse yet—will we be indifferent to God’s call?

Of course, the lesson taught here has nothing to do with clothes or

how we are dressed when we come to Mass.

Instead it refers to the spirit in which we enter God’s house.

The garments of the mind and heart are most important.

When one freely accepts Christ as Lord and Savior,

one must dedicate one’s life to Jesus. Christians must be clothed in the

Spirit and teachings of Jesus; clothed in honesty, purity, and holiness.

God is constantly calling us to be the people he intended us to be.

But we don’t always cooperate with the urging of the Holy Spirit.

We sometimes say to ourselves:

I know I need to pray, but I just can’t find the time.

I know I should make an effort to get to Mass regularly but things come up.

I know I should be more charitable to so and so,

but I can’t seem to will myself to do it.

I know that dishonesty is wrong,

but I tell myself everyone else is doing it. —What I do is so minor.

I know I should at least call my sick or elderly neighbor, but my favorite TV program is on.

We all have a long list of things we should and should not be doing.

But we have a longer list of excuses.

Before you can give people the Good News,

you must give them the Bad News. Otherwise,

they will not see how important the Good News is for their souls.

We all want to accept Jesus’ invitation to the heavenly banquet.

The danger is not that we will refuse the invitation and turn to evil.

The real danger is that we will act indifferently

and not put on the garments of righteousness.
