CITATION

STAFF SERGEANT ERNEST D WINN 32740110 Field Artillery, Headquarters Battery, 751st Field Artillery Battalion, United States Army, for heroic achievement in action against the enemy on 28 and 29 October 1944, in Germany. When communications were disrupted between the battalion command post and the forward observation posts, Staff Sergeant Winn, with two other men, was ordered to check the communication lines. When the enemy artillery shells fell in the area, Staff Sergeant Winn and his detail sought cover before continuing the work on the line. Through lulls in the artillery fire, Staff Sergeant Winn was able to lead his team to successfully repair the line which was continually being broken by the artillery fire. These efforts made possible artillery fire to fall on observed targets at daybreak. This devotion to duty was an inspiration to all. Entered military service from New York.
