UPPER SCHOOL
2025-2026
2025-2026
Dear Upper School Families,
As some of you may know, I was away last week in Michigan attending the funeral of a close family friend. This trip turned out to be much more as my Father was brought home from the hospital in hospice where he passed away within 48 hours of his return. Thanks to the perseverance of my sister to make arrangements, we were able to quickly fulfill his desire to die in our family home of 50 years. I was so fortunate to be there when that occurred.
In recent years, my Father expressed regret that he was unable to spend more time with his children when we were young. My Father was a pioneer Hematologist-Oncologist and worked long hours, often seven days a week between his office hours on weekdays and seeing patients on weekends at four different hospitals throughout the Detroit area. My response to my Father took him by surprise.
From a very early age, we understood that my Father’s career was a calling. His success can largely be attributed to the compassion in which he exhibited to his patients and their families, many of whom were devastated by their diagnosis of cancer and were comforted by both his expertise and his bed-side manner. We were always so proud of our Dad. Despite his long hours at work, he was always present in our lives. He insisted on family dinners every night. As a teenager, I protested our typical 9 pm dinners, but I now see that this was how we stayed connected. We also had his undivided attention on our family vacations. The stories of our vacations together dominated the conversations me and my siblings had last week following his death.
Let all of us find ways in our busy lives to find ways to stay connected with our children. It is so important.
We remind all US athletes participating in winter sports that they must complete their athletic clearances in order to participate. All the information they need is on this page: https://sites.google.com/shorecrest.org/home/athletics
With the success of our recent service event at the Special Olympics, I would like to remind students and their families that there are many ways for our students to earn community service hours. Click this link to learn about other opportunities.
We're excited to announce the schedule for Homecoming 2025! Due to a shortened week and the PSAT, we've adjusted our usual timeline to ensure all students can participate in the festivities. Homecoming will officially kick off on Friday, October 17, with our Homecoming Court presentation at halftime of the highly anticipated football game. The following week, Monday, October 20-Saturday, October 25, will be packed with special events, including daily dress-up days (October 21-23), a class competition day (October 24), and the culminating Homecoming Dance (October 25). We look forward to celebrating with our students and creating lasting memories.
This year a new policy has been introduced to better support transitions from an honors course to a college prep course. The deadline for these changes has been extended to October 15, allowing students additional time to adjust to the honors curriculum and determine whether it is the right fit. No schedule changes of this type will be permitted after October 15.
Have a wonderful week!
