LOWER SCHOOL
2025-2026
2025-2026
Dear Lower School Families,
Our children are gearing up for Field Day this Friday, February 27, and it’s going to be an action-packed morning of play. To make sure your student has the best experience, please send them to school in their team colored shirts – and of course, with a hat and comfortable sneakers. We also recommend applying sunscreen before drop-off. Kids will be taking their water bottles with them to keep hydrated throughout the games. Whether they’re mastering the tug-of-war or cheering on their classmates, the goal of the day is simple: stay active, play safe, have a blast and take care of each other.
Get those smiles ready! Class photos are happening this Wednesday, February 25, and we want to help your little ones feel like stars. The photographers start when school starts so please be on time. There are no make ups.
In a world of sleek glass screens and endless scrolling, we’ve decided to go full retro with a "Tin Can" phone, and honestly, it’s the best $90 I’ve spent to survive the "EVERYONE has a phone but me!" era. This isn't two soup cans and a string; it’s a glorious, plastic throwback with a stretchy spiral cord that screams 1991. It’s a total nostalgia trip for me, even if my husband is still raising an eyebrow at my "anti-device" crusade.
My girls were surprisingly elated, though the learning curve was hilarious. I actually had to show my five-year-old how to hold it so the "voice part" and "ear part" lined up, and we’ve had several lessons on the physical art of "hanging up" - turns out, the concept of placing a receiver back on a hook is brand new information! Watching them learn the lost arts of phone etiquette, like deciphering a dial tone or realizing you can’t just hang up when you’re done (please at least say goodbye first) is pure comedy. Between Auntie calling to plot sleepovers and the kids calling me at the grocery store to demand I hurry home with the snacks, our house finally has that classic, chaotic soundtrack of a ringing phone. Who knew a corded line could be the ultimate loophole for keeping childhood simple? Bonus: 4 other kids in my 3rd grader’s class have one, too!
We are deeply committed to honoring the essence of childhood. By granting our students the autonomy to play, we create the space for magic to happen. Recently, Mrs. Casano’s first-grade class embarked on an inquiry into theater and storytelling. Using student-crafted masks as their inspiration, these young creators wrote, directed, and performed their own original plays. I had the distinct pleasure of attending a reading of their work and witnessing their imagination in action.

I hope everyone has an amazing week! Starting Tuesday morning, February 24, I will be heading to Seattle to attend the NAIS Thrive 2026 Annual Conference. This conference brings together independent school leaders, researchers, and educators from across the globe. As you can imagine, there is a focus on how we can better navigate the changing landscape of education, i.e., the ethical integration of AI. I am eager to learn from this year’s distinguished keynote speakers, participate in workshops and visit Giddens, one of Seattle' s best child centered independent schools.
While I am away, Mrs. Sarah Palazzolo, Assistant Head of the Lower School, will be in charge and is available to assist you with any immediate needs. I look forward to returning with inspired ideas to further enrich our school community!
With great appreciation,
Lisa

How is Artificial Intelligence (AI) enriching the way our children learn, create and grow? Go behind the scenes and see exactly how we are incorporating AI into our classrooms to enhance teaching and learning while staying anchored to our Mission and Core Values.
Following an overview we will transition into smaller groups for deeper, age-appropriate discussions and Q&A.
