EXPERIENTIAL SCHOOL
2025-2026
2025-2026
Dear Experiential School families,
Today, I want to share a recent, delightful observation from our playground—an everyday Florida scene that quickly transformed into an extraordinary learning landscape. It all started with bamboo.
As you know, the plant is a common feature in many Florida landscapes, and the children had no trouble incorporating the segments of bamboo from our play area into their imaginative worlds. This brings us to a concept we cherish in early education: the loose parts.
A loose part is essentially any material that children can move, carry, combine, redesign, and take apart—and it’s the ultimate antidote to the "one-function-wonder" toy.
In the hands of your child, that piece of bamboo is not just a stick. It instantly morphs and gives life to a myriad of thoughts and experiences. It might become:
A structural beam for a collaborative fort.
A magical wand in a dramatic quest.
A bridge connecting two imaginary islands.
A musical instrument, tapping out a rhythm.
A piece of puppet scaffolding for a show they're staging!
Toys with a single feature and a pre-determined goal normally cannot present children with the myriad of possibilities that bring their play to its highest level. That’s why often children end up turning them into something else.
The open-endedness of the bamboo is a direct invitation for creativity, communication, and collaboration—the very hallmarks of deep learning.
We often say children learn through play, but I want to be specific about the foundational learning happening here. This isn't about formal, traditional rote skills; it's about the essential "hard skills" for human relationships and resilience that will support everything else later in life.
When we, as educators, choose to observe from afar—guaranteeing safety, but deliberately choosing non-interference—we demonstrate a profound trust in your child as a competent protagonist. This allows the flow of their interaction to take them to unimaginable places. Our nature-focused playground, with its openness and diverse materials, isn't just a backdrop; it’s an active curator of student-centered environments that fosters:
Exercising Uncertainty: “Wait, if we use this piece here, will the whole thing fall down?”
Embracing Dissonance: Navigating conflicts and finding solutions through dialogue.
Multiple Perspectives: “I see it as a flag pole, but you see it as a river. How can we make it both?” This ability to hold varied perspectives is the starting point for global collaboration and a deeply cherished democratic practice.
Resilience and Redirection: When a plan fails (and they often do!), they must immediately employ growth mindset principles to find another way.
Their play is truly hard work, requiring focus, negotiation, and an incredible amount of intellectual energy. And we commend them for coming back every day and jumping right back into it, conflicts and all.
We are not just raising children who are good at puzzles; we are fostering minds that can exercise uncertainty and achieve flexibility in a complex world—and that, to us, is the best education we can offer.
Sincerely,
Adriana & The Experiential School Team

🌍 Be a Global Reader! Friday, November 21 • 1:50–2:20 PM
We’re Rosana (Pepe's mom Alpha) and Catalina (Ari's mom JK), and we’re so excited to lead this year’s Global Readers program with the International Connections Group. We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join us in sharing the joy of storytelling and culture, and we’d love for you to be part of it!
What You’ll Do:
Read a children’s book in your own language and lead a short, engaging activity that helps students discover your country or culture. Volunteers will teach a few simple words in their language (like hello, goodbye, please, and thank you) and are encouraged to bring visuals or cultural items—such as flags, clothing, or music—to make the experience interactive and fun. You’re also welcome to decorate or set up the classroom to create a festive, one-of-a-kind atmosphere for your presentation.
📅 Friday, November 21, 1:50–2:20pm
📍 Experiential School classrooms
Note: We’re also welcoming backup volunteers who can step in if a main reader becomes unavailable, a great way to stay involved and support the event!
Next Steps: We’ll need confirmed volunteers by November 3 for the first event so we can coordinate with each reader. Once confirmed, we’ll reach out to learn more about your chosen book and activity or help brainstorm ideas if you’d like suggestions. All materials will be reviewed and approved by Mrs. Hollenbeck before the event.
Sign up HERE: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E054BACA823A31-59726951-global
Future Date: May 1 (we're also already taking volunteers for this date)
Let’s fill this day with color, culture, and joy — we can’t wait to see the love and creativity you bring to share with the children!

At Shorecrest both The Experiential School and the Lower School support the Kind Mouse food pantry.
The Kind Mouse is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in St. Petersburg, Florida dedicated to feeding local children suffering from chronic hunger and food insecurities. Founded in 2012 by Gina Wilkins, The Kind Mouse is comprised of a passionate group of volunteers ranging in age from 5 to 93 who are committed to ensuring no child in Pinellas County goes hungry. Our mission is to assist families in transition and their chronically hungry children while developing the next generation of volunteers to carry on the mission of The Kind Mouse. No hardworking individual and their family should ever go hungry.”
Pictured are the most needed items:
If your family wishes to contribute, you may send the items with your child or drop them off at the bins located at the main entrance of The Experiential School.
As of now space in Experiential School Extended Day is limited to those who have preregistered. Due to staffing shortages, we are unable to accept any children as drop-ins. Please check online at shorecrest.campbrainregistration.com to confirm that you have registered before leaving your child at school for Extended Day care. We will keep you updated as to when we are able to open additional spaces. Thank you for understanding!

Shorecrest Middle School Performing Arts presents “All Shook Up - Young@Part” an Elvis-themed musical starring students in grades 6-8 on November 6-8 in the Janet Root Theatre.
This crowd-pleasing musical is inspired by Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and features the songs of Elvis Presley®. It’s 1955 in a small honky-tonk town, and a guitar-playing roustabout changes everything! He rides in on his motorcycle and sparks mistaken identities and people falling in love all over the place. “Come on everybody” and join us as the people of the town fight against the strict Mayor’s laws prohibiting loud music, tight pants, and…hand holding! All the while they are learning to love themselves and follow the music in their hearts.
This Young@Part more junior version of the original show, will get your blue suede shoes tapping and have you dancing in your seat to classics such as “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Jailhouse Rock.”
Tickets are $10. Tickets may be purchased online or by credit card or check at the Janet Root Theatre Box Office during Box Office hours. Seats will be assigned in the order of purchase. The deadline to purchase online is Thursday, November 6 at noon. Please visit our Box Office in person after that time. Click below for full details!
