Shopee’s 2024 Fashion Show, ‘Raya Stail Kita’,

Celebrates Malaysia’s Golden Age of Culture

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 March 2024 – This Raya, Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, championed inclusivity and diversity with its #RayaStailKita Fashion Show. The inaugural fashion show spotlighted a range of women-led and owned fashion sellers on Shopee, featuring the likes of Liyana Collection, Asikin Ahmad, Hernes and Inhanna. The fashion show also featured body-positive model Hikma as the headline model, embodying Shopee's commitment to inclusivity. This initiative represented Shopee's ongoing effort to champion a more welcoming and representative e-commerce space, benefiting both sellers and consumers.

Women on Shopee Foster Supportive E-commerce Communities

Shopee actively provides a platform for women to thrive in e-commerce, and their success stories have inspired and empowered other women to pursue entrepreneurial ventures in e-commerce. Many female entrepreneurs on Shopee champion female empowerment in tangible ways.  They create flexible work environments that cater to women's needs, foster supportive communities for other women sellers, and often hire diverse workforces that include other women.

Puan Norliyana Abdul Ghani, Founder of Liyana Collection, a Kedah-based Muslim fashion brand and one of the brands featured in the Shopee Raya Stail Kita Fashion Show 2024, echoed this sentiment, “Over 90% of our staff are female and we have been intentional in our hiring process to ensure women have opportunities to thrive in e-commerce, providing opportunities to those that show determination, passion and willingness to learn about the fashion industry, even though they may not have prior expertise or experience.”

Adding on to the chorus, Puan Asikin Arifin, Founder and Board of Director of Asikin Ahmad, one of the brands featured in the Shopee Raya Stail Kita Fashion Show 2024, said, “As a female-owned and -led brand, women empowerment is in our DNA. E-commerce allows women the flexibility to work remotely, according to daily schedules as moms or caregivers for parents, and achieve financial independence that can significantly uplift both their families and their surrounding communities.”

Shopee Provides Upskilling Opportunities to Women Sellers

Shopee has been driving women's empowerment in e-commerce through its free platform, Shopee University.  Since its inception, Shopee University has offered daily classes, reaching over 100,000 attendees at any one time and covers topics designed to upskill and provide networking opportunities with inspiring female entrepreneurs to local sellers to enhance their potential at the same time, scale their business, especially in maximizing potential and driving sales for key sales events throughout the year.

As the women seller and designer herself, Puan Norliyana echoed this sentiment, "There's a surge of young women, Gen Zs and Millennials, entering the e-commerce space," she observed. "We expect even more young women to launch their careers in the digital marketplace. This is where Shopee University becomes crucial. It equips sellers with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed, effectively upskilling and future-proofing the e-commerce workforce, especially for women."

Puan Asikin chimed in with her agreement, “When women are offered opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills, along with flexible work schedules, they are more likely to pursue careers in e-commerce.” According to her, the training programmes and seminars hosted by Shopee have enabled more women to attain new knowledge and test out newfound skills, from identifying key trends to capitalize on, honing soft skills for better customer service relations to leveraging live streaming on Shopee Live to increase brand visibility. “As a muslimah entrepreneur, I aim to be part of giving back to society. Through developing people and helping sustain the economy chain," she added.

Kenneth Soh, Head of Marketing at Shopee Malaysia said, “As important drivers for e-commerce in Malaysia continuing into 2024, women sellers are a major force behind the booming Malaysian e-commerce market in 2024. By breaking barriers and achieving success, these women sellers pave the way for a more inclusive and thriving e-commerce ecosystem for everyone. Shopee's platform empowers women to not only launch businesses but also create a supportive environment that benefits all participants.”
