SHS School Lunch

Student Poll Highlights Favorite Lunches

By: Brendan Clark

Shelby High School students reported chicken fried steak and pizza as their favorite school lunches. Collectively, the students said that these two lunches are the most filling and taste good.

Last week, 40 students were given a survey about their favorite school lunch and if they receive enough food during lunchtime. Of the 40 students that took the school lunch survey, 28 of them are either active outside of school or play sports. Over half of the students that are active feel like they need a larger quantity of food during lunch. We asked Cade Alexander about the quantity of food at school, “When I go to lunch I’m pretty hungry and want to be full and energized when I go to practice later in the day.”

The survey also asked the students what their top 5 favorite lunches were out of the 10 given to them. The 10 lunches that they were able to choose from included chicken fried steak, hamburgers, grilled cheese, chicken burgers, mini corn dogs, chili, pork tacos, pizza, sloppy joes, and spaghetti.

The survey results showed that 11 people chose chicken fried steak, 9 people chose pizza, a tie between chicken burgers and grilled cheese at 4. There was a three way tie between hamburgers, pork tacos, and sloppy joes. Two people vouched for chili and 1 for mini corn dogs as their favorite lunch. We asked Ivan Wickum why he chose chicken fried steak as his favorite lunch. Ivan said, “Chicken fried steak in my opinion is the most filling and tasty lunch that the school offers.”

Students would like to see a larger quantity of food at lunch as well as higher quality lunches. There are students who are active that would like more food during lunch; However, there are students who are reportedly inactive or less active than others that also feel the same way about the quantity and quality of food. Even though there are still some lunches that students are filled with such as chicken fried steak and pizza: students are still searching for more food to help them through their daily tasks.
