From October 2025 Windows 10 will no longer be supported by Microsoft. In order to mitigate the security risk posed by machines running Windows 10 after this time, and to ensure a continued good user experience for all staff, IT Services are rolling out Windows 11 to all compatible devices across the University.
Please install the Windows 11 upgrade from the Software Centre by Wednesday 10 September. When someone logs in after 10 September without having done a manual update, you will find that the update is taking place automatically and you won't be able to complete your login and access emails or any files for between 30 and 60 minutes.
In order to identify the operating system you are currently using, the version is displayed on the screen before you log in (see the different screenshots) - should you identify that your machine is on Windows 10 please follow the instructions below to upgrade.
The update can be found by searching for ‘Windows 11’ in the Software centre. The relevant icon is highlighted below.
Once you have selected the update and clicked on ‘install’ the update will download. Your device will be usable during this time. Your computer will then request a reboot during which time the update will be applied. This will take 30-60 minutes, during which time your device will not be usable. We recommend performing the upgrade with a strong internet connection, with your device plugged in to AC power, at a time when you do not need to use it (e.g. lunchtime or end of day).
The update should not impact any applications or saved files on your device, however as a precautionary measure it is advisable to follow best practice and ensure all files are saved centrally in the appropriate shared network drives.
