Year 7
Year 7 Drama has been buzzing with creativity and exploration! We've journeyed through diverse theatrical styles, engaging in exciting practical work.
Module 3 saw students delving into the world of Naturalism. We focused on creating believable characters and delivering authentic scripted performances. Students meticulously analysed exerpts of the script 'Sparkleshark', exploring subtext and motivation. From subtle facial expressions to nuanced vocal tones, students demonstrated a keen understanding of portraying everyday characters in relatable situations.
Now, we've embarked on Module 4, venturing into the captivating realm of Physical Theatre and Non-Naturalism. This module is pushing the boundaries of traditional performance. Students are exploring how to communicate through movement, gesture, and physicality, rather than relying solely on spoken words. We are learning how to create abstract and symbolic performances, exploring techniques such as mime, physical theatre and ensemble work. This module is encouraging them to think outside the box and different ways of storytelling. We are excited to see the innovative and imaginative performances that emerge!
Year 8
Module 3 saw Year 8 students dissecting the poignant narrative of Willy Russell's "Blood Brothers." We explored the play's rich social context, examining themes of class, fate, and family. Through engaging activities like hot-seating, students delved into the complex motivations of characters, gaining a deeper understanding of their choices and circumstances. They then brought iconic scenes to life, demonstrating impressive theatrical skill.
Now, in Module 4, we've shifted our focus to the pervasive influence of social media. Students are exploring the advantages and disadvantages of this digital landscape, crafting original performances that reflect their insights. This module encourages students to consider the impact of online interactions on individuals and society. To enrich their performances, they are incorporating physical theatre techniques, including the dynamic "Round-By-Through" method, which allows for fluid transitions and multi-layered storytelling, as well as interesting soundscapes! The students are demonstrating insightful observations and innovative performance styles, highlighting the power of theatre to engage with contemporary issues. We look forward to seeing the powerful and thought-provoking performances that emerge from this exploration.
Year 9
Year 9 Drama has been a whirlwind of technical exploration! We’ve navigated complex narratives and delved into the intricacies of theatrical design.
Module 3 saw students tackling Dennis Kelly’s gripping play, “DNA.” This darkly comedic thriller challenged them to explore themes of peer pressure, morality, and the consequences of collective action. Students dissected the play's unsettling atmosphere, analysing the characters' motivations and the play's underlying social commentary. Through dramatic interpretations and in-depth discussions, they grappled with the play’s moral ambiguity, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of complex dramatic texts. The students' ability to portray the play's tense and unsettling atmosphere was commendable.
Now, in Module 4, we've shifted our focus to the crucial elements of stagecraft. Students are exploring the art of lighting design, set design, and costume design, understanding how these elements contribute to the overall impact of a performance. We are examining different types of staging, from proscenium arches to thrust stages and theatre in the round, and considering how each configuration affects the audience’s experience. Students are learning how to use these technical skills to create immersive and impactful theatrical experiences. We are excited to see their creative visions come to life as they design and implement their own stage productions.
KS4
Our KS4 Drama students are demonstrating exceptional dedication and creative skill, tackling both theoretical and practical challenges with enthusiasm.
Year 10 students are currently engaged in the rigorous process of completing their Component 1 coursework for BTEC "Exploring the Performing Arts," following their insightful study of "Everybody's Talking About Jamie." This analysis requires them to articulate their understanding of the production's elements, from performance to design, and demonstrate critical thinking. They are developing essential analytical and writing skills that will serve them well in their academic and creative journeys.
Year 11 are immersed in the collaborative world of Frantic Assembly’s "Things I Know To Be True", actively exploring the creative process, understanding the diverse roles and responsibilities involved in bringing this physically demanding piece to life.
Simultaneously, Year 11 are diligently working on Component 3, "Responding to a Brief." They are tasked with devising original performances based on the theme "Joint Effort," drawing inspiration from the innovative style of The Paper Birds. This involves blending Verbatim Theatre techniques with Brechtian elements, challenging them to create socially conscious and engaging performances. We are excited to see the powerful and thought-provoking performances they will produce!
