WTT v4 SAMR for Digital Parent Communication Tools
Substitution – The Digital Parent Communication Tool helps keep parents up-to-date about things happening in the classroom, eliminating the need for a physical agenda to be sent home and signed nightly:
Teachers send out notices and reminders
Students and parents read these to know of coming events, upcoming tests, etc.
Posts typically pertain to the whole-class
Augmentation – The Digital Parent Communication Tool is able to show student work so that both school and home are aware of what is happening now in a child's classroom:
Teachers post images of class trips, student assignments (generally final products)
Students and parents see what has been done recently, and can "like" or comment
Teachers have the opportunity to provide assessment information on the post
Modification – The Digital Communication Tool engages parents and students into having home conversations that are more about learning and less about scores or marks:
Teachers post evidence of work, linked to outcomes that may be revisited over time
Students occasionally post work or reflections using a template/script
Parents are asked to comment on the ongoing work, and to provide more targeted home support
Redefinition – The Digital Communication Tool allows for rich conversations, both at school and at home, about what students are learning, and where they are at in the process:
Teachers post some work, but generally create posts that provide parents with talking points that relate directly to their child's learning
Students self-reflect on posts, directly identifying what they are learning, where their gaps are, and what needs to happen moving forward
Parents know exactly what their child has accomplished in the context of the outcomes, what is still missing or needs further work, and where to support their child in his/her learning journey
