How was your trip?

Cuba is a land of relaxation but also realization. The minute I walked out of the airport, I felt my mind and body awaken, almost like I lived there my entire life. I've never felt more alive! You suddenly realize the world isn't as monochromatic as it appears to be seeing an entire culture built on the blending and mixture of different races and ethnicities. You realize that people can be just as happy in a political state that is often shunned for its ideals. I had to see for myself that Communism isn't bad like America portrays it to be. People are not dying, or a majority of people are impoverished. I didn't see not one homeless person while in Havana! Instead, I saw farmers and doctors, but I also saw filmmakers and museum curators, all who are proud with what they do. I was so amazed by the architecture of Havana as well! The colorful houses reminded me of San Francisco and I liked the contrast from the traditional row-homes of Philly (they can be so boring!) The food, music, weather and people were AMAZING! I think the happiest moment for me was seeing the vast presence of Afro-Cubans in Havana. Being Nigerian and knowing Cuba's history of a lot of the enslaved people being of Nigerian/Yoruba descent, I felt a deep connection, especially when we learned of Santeria. Overall, Cuba was amazing. There are those who abide and love their country and those who otherwise, disagree with the politics but I still sense a great deal of pride that Cubans have for their country and culture. It was in Havana where I witnessed happiness in its purest form :)

And a Big Thank You to...

...all of the donors from DonorsChoose who contributed to our trip! Thank you, thank you thank you!!! I would also like to thank the whole gang of the trip. I didn't expect to make such great friends with the underclassmen but I ended up having very special bonds with everyone. You guys made my experience so much better! I also thank the teachers for choosing me to be apart of this experience. This is by far the greatest moment of my high school career. And lastly, our tour guide, Jo. She was so kind and she had anything but boring personality! I really appreciate the fact that she answered all of our questions and her patience with us even though we were late (many times lol).
