In our comprehensive literacy program, learning is comprised of five parts of the process of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency. As students develop their skills in all five of these areas they become fluent and successful readers.
The reading workshop is one component of the District's comprehensive literacy program. In addition to time set aside each day for reading workshop, there are other components of literacy that students participate in to develop the skills and understanding that good readers possess: Phonemic Awareness, Word Study, Interactive Read Aloud, and Shared Reading;
To truly support readers, especially in the primary grades, a literacy program should include the balance of reading workshop, read-aloud with accountable talk, shared reading, and phonics. Skills and concepts are taught through these components in a planned, logically progressive sequence.
