Assessment

Value of Assessment

Scarsdale elementary teachers use assessments to determine the specific strengths and instructional goals for each student. We use three main types of assessment; diagnostic or pre-assessment, formative, and summative.

  • Diagnostic assessments help us to identify students’ current knowledge of a subject, their skill sets and capabilities, and clarify misconceptions before teaching takes place.

  • Formative assessments provide Scarsdale teachers with feedback and information during the instructional process while learning is taking place.

  • Summative assessments are used at the end of the learning process and evaluate students using a standard or benchmark.

Analysis of these assessments allows us to differentiate student instruction and plan for multiple student access points. This is an ongoing process in which teachers identify the progression of students’ development along the continuum of literacy learning.

Hybrid Learning Assessment Toolkits:

Grade level toolkits have been created by District teachers to assess student well-being, along with formative assessments that could best measure student readiness and serve as a gauge for transitions and informing our instruction going forward into the 2020-21 school year.
