Informal Running Records

Informal Running Records

We use informal running records on an ongoing basis to monitor student reading progress. Running records allow teachers to evaluate how students are decoding, comprehending, and analyzing texts at various levels. As text difficulty increases, teachers continue to monitor accuracy, fluency, and literal and inferential comprehension skills. Teachers gain different types of information from running records. Miscue Analysis is used to determine which processes a student uses while reading orally. Miscues are categorized in a three cueing system, otherwise known as MSV, meaning (semantic), syntax (syntactic), or visual (graphophonics) A successful reader integrates all three cueing systems.
