Writing Self-Assessment

Rubrics are used by both teachers and students as a ladder to help lift the level of their writing. This supports a growth mindset towards writing as students set clear goals for themselves. Students and teachers can reflect and use the information as part of their ongoing self-assessment, which will allow the student to set more purposeful goals.

Areas for self assessment include structure, development, and language conventions. Writer's notebooks can be used to track volume, stamina, and story seed ideas. Students use rubrics to monitor their progress and set their own goals. We need to teach our students how to self-assess effectively. Writing conferences are a great time to teach this skill to students. While setting goals, students and teachers may support the work with tips from experts like the Writing Strategies book by Jennifer Serravallo. Here is a sample of how one of our 2nd grade teacher uses her work.
