The History of Cigar Box Instruments
Saturday June 3rd

Mrs. Hill and Madame Klein introduced Career Day in All School Meeting.  Mrs Hill would like to thank the following community members who volunteered their time to present during Career Day:

Artist Erik Koeppel

WMSI data scientists Amanda Carron and Matt Wolfe

Chemist Emily Calderwood

Engineer Beth-Ann Henriques

Fishing Guide Clay Groves

Business Owner Rob Clark

Artist Eric Koepple invited Grade 4 to the Jackson Historical Society's Museum of White Mountain Art.

Bug-bit and sun-burned the day after their return from a 3-day canoe trip, fifth and sixth graders hung in there for discussion of the Periodic Table of the Elements and a chemistry experiment with Emily Calderwood, chemist.

Amanda Carron from White Mountain Science Inc., (WMSI) shows Grade 4 a prompt in a game to simulate coding.

Rob Clark brought his ice cream truck to illustrate the creativity of an entrepreneur.

Clay Groves and friend tell K-1-2-3 about his adventures as a fishing guide.

The ice cream...and Career Day! were a big hit!

Annual Potato Planting Tradition Continues! Here's what Grey, Damien, and Jeremy have to tell us:

The 2/3 planted potatoes. They planted them in the gardens. After we harvest them we will make chips.

How many did you plant? Nine in the front and ten in the back. What tools did you use? Shovels and little rakes.  Anything new about this year's planting? The three beds were moved from the blacktop to left of the field.

Well, this is the red potatoes and we were measuring a foot apart so they have space to grow.

We cover up the potatoes or "seeds" with little dirt and every time the sprouts come out of the dirt we will cover them with excess dirt so the plant grows more potatoes.

JGS News for May 26, 2023

Farmer John of the Thompson House Farm directs Mrs. Robert's 2-3 class in weeding the greenhouse! George and Teagen tell us: We learned about what helps tomatoes thrive, like the fans that give a breeze that makes the stalks move and that makes them stronger. If the tomato plants didn't move they wouldn't be strong and would just fall over.

Jackson School News for May 26, 2023

Notes from the Principal

Dear Jackson School Community,

I so enjoyed the children’s many talents in the “12 Dancing Royals!” So many of the children took risks: acting, dancing, singing solos, even using the light and sound equipment! I’m very proud of their work! Thanks to Believe in Books, Mrs Groves, PTO, and the other Jackson Community donors who made it possible!

Please enjoy the Memorial Day Weekend. Don't forget the the Jackson memorial ceremony at the Jackson Cemetery at 9 AM and the Moment of Silence at 3:00 pm.! It is important the children understand the sacrifices of others who earned us the freedoms we enjoy today!

Happy Memorial Day!

Gayle

Community Events for Families

Hey, JGS Families!

This year fourth graders learned about the science of sound and applied that to building musical instruments. Check out this talk coming up at the Jackson Public Library:

The History of Cigar Box Instruments
Saturday June 3rd

“The History of Cigar Box Instruments” is coming to the Jackson Public Library at 52 Main Street on Saturday June 3 at 4:00 p.m.

Hosted by the Friends of the Jackson Public Library, “The History of Cigar Box Instruments” will be presented by William Janelle. It will cover how the cigar box came about and how it has been used over the past 180 years to make stringed instruments. Janelle will also cover how the cigar box guitar has been modernized and finding a niche in today's music. His talk will also demonstrate the building of a primitive diddley bow.

Janelle is a self-taught sculptor who works primarily in wood. He grew up in Saco, Maine and has been carving for over forty years. As a subtractive sculptor, he takes away from a single block with hand tools, often leaving tool marks behind as a sort of fingerprint. He prefers to work with apple, cherry, butternut, and walnut but often works in marble, soapstone, alabaster, pumpkin, ice, and snow.

The Friends of the Jackson Public Library is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit group of community members interested in helping the library. The Friends support the library by planning, funding, and hosting programs, by supplementing the book budget of the library, and helping to fund technology upgrades, equipment, and furnishings.

JGS News for May 12, 2023

Notes from the Principal

Dear JGS community,

What a wonderful Unified Arts Show last night. I found myself reflecting upon the messages and meaning of many of the songs. All we need is love, we wish you peace, take care of the earth. Seeing our 5/6 students perform so well together and take ownership of the development of their performances demonstrated to me that the JGS school community provides opportunities for all children to find their niche. Success may look different for every child but there were so many moments when our children stepped out of their comfort  zone, took a risk and achieved success! I am proud of all of our talented children. You are all amazing!

In addition, I want to share appreciation again for our staff and UA teachers who go above and beyond the call to ensure the children are prepared, supported and appreciated! Kudos to the PTO  as well who always support us.  And thank you to all who shared treats and notes and flowers during teacher appreciation week. It is so rewarding to have our efforts recognized. Thank you.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our moms!

Best,

Gayle

Engineering Challenge: THE EGG DROP

Mrs. Robert explained the all-school challenge: build a container that will keep its passenger egg from cracking when the sixth grade drops it from the JGS attic window to the blacktop below.

Students worked in buddy teams across the grades with just a few materials to design a flight case that could also be opened to check the egg's status upon landing.

A few of the designs. Which will protect the egg?

Out the window! Ask a student:  What did you learn? What did you notice? What do you wonder?

Below the salt: Parents joined peasants and trades folk at the Medieval Feast before April break

Chivalry is not dead: nobles, knights, peasants, and trades folk told stories from the Middle Ages to school mates on  a glorious afternoon before April break.

End of April, 2023 - News and Photos! Welcome, May!

It was really beautiful to watch 11 children painting collaboratively today. When a challenge arose they worked together to figure it out and completed each heart artistically and with color balance. Each student painted a little bit on every heart.

Dear Families,

Can it really be that  spring has sprung? With spring comes a number of important (and fun) school events you don't want to miss. Next week we host the Daughters of the American Revolution, Anna Stickney Chapter, as we continue the longstanding Jackson tradition of participation in the Annual DAR Essay Contest. Jackson students have traditionally done very well as they show off their writing abilities to a wide audience. Our Unified Arts Show comes up in May as does another theater week at Believe in Books. I am so proud of the Arts focus we maintain here at JGS! Be sure to read your newsletter and mark your calendar as you don’t want to miss any of these wonderful events!

Have a great weekend,

Dear JGS Families,

With the change of seasons and the end of the second trimester comes the wrap up of ski programs, the opportunity to conference with your child and their teacher, and to look towards the end of the school year and the events of Trimester 3. A huge thank you to Mike Dufilho, Nordic Ski Coordinator, and Neil Stokes, ESSC Coordinator, for all their work this ski season! We loved skiing the trails JXN XC and Black Mountain and thank their crews for all their support this ski season! These programs wouldn't run without parent and community volunteers - thanks to each of you!

This afternoon, evening, and tomorrow morning, we'll be holding conferences here at school. Childcare will be available. I am so proud of our students and look forward to parents seeing their children shine in their conference!

The sap is flowing as sugaring season progresses in grades 4-5-6. We're spending more time outside as the cold eases, getting ready to start the yearbook, and looking forward to  Kindergarten registration on May 8th! It's an exciting trimester ahead!

Best, Gayle

PE News:  Students in grades 4-6 took a trip over the river and through the woods, popping out just before Flossies.  This trail from the fire pond was ideal for practicing their hill climbing and their slowing and stopping techniques on the descent.  Our K-3 squirrels skied to collect acorns to bring back to their trees, hoping the foxes, dogs, and cats would not catch them in their travels.  All students tried the 3 legged race (photo) or the scooter glide on one ski.

Next nordic PE will be the Skiathon on March 1st!

Jackson Young People Organizing Ski-for-Sunshine

Cranmore Mountain’s Ski for Sunshine Fundraiser for Camp Sunshine March 4th

Four of Jackson’s young people are leading the way in organizing the Ski-for-Sunshine event at Cranmore, scheduled for March 4th from 4 PM to 8 PM.

Molly DellaValla, Joseph DellaValla, Autumn Verran and Jeffrey Tierney, all Jackson residents and members of the Kennett High School Key Club, are getting things ready for year two of this community event and fantastic fundraiser.  All proceeds will go to Camp Sunshine in Casco, Maine, which is a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

It costs only $45 to register and participate!  For that $45, each participant gets a lift ticket, refreshments, and a goody bag with coupons for free items. Participants can form teams and pledge additional donations for the number of ski runs they accomplish if they wish to do so.

There will also be an auction with a twist, music, and food this year. Non-skiers are welcome to join in the fun! Just show up!

Individuals and teams can sign up to “Ski for Sunshine” on this link which can be copied and pasted into your browser:

3. FOOD DRIVE: End 68 Hours of Hunger is a wonderful program that provides food for students to eat during the 68 hours between the end of school on a Friday afternoon and the beginning of school Monday morning.  Two years ago the schools in SAU 9 had a friendly competition to see who could collect the most items for the program, and our little school collected a LOT of Mac and Cheese.  It's time for another round of competition!  This year our assignment is collect soup and canned chili between March 6th and March 17th, although we will happily begin collecting items now.  Stay tuned for some statistics on our collection provided by the 6th grade.  ~ Mrs.Hill, JGS School Counselor

The last time we participated in the End 68 Hours of Hunger Food Drive Competition, this Jackson Jaguar was in Kindergarten and the perfect size to be the measuring stick for our donated items. How tall will our collection be this year?

I hope to see many parents and guardians tonight at the Budget Hearing at 6:00PM (the School Board meeting starts at 5:30.) Come and learn about the proposed school budget for the 2023-24 school year --including information about the warrant article requesting money to replace the school playground!

Stay Warm,

Gayle

Ski Program Updates!

Today, Thursday: After School Nordic is now CANCELED due to lack of vols. We'd need all (gloved) hands on deck to cover skiers on the trails and skiers warming up in the lodge. and we simply do not have enough adults for safe skiing in today's temps. We still plan to cross country ski in PE on Monday, so it's ok to leave any gear you've dropped off if your skier won't need it over the weekend.

Tomorrow, Friday: ESSC is now CANCELED due to the temps predicted for tomorrow. We'll have a full day of school!

For today and tomorrow's dismissal, please let me know if your student's routine has changed. I've heard from several parents already - thank you! ~Susan

Mrs. Robert's Second and Third Graders presented their learning about Asia and the Lunar New Year in All School Meeting today! The captions, below, are some of main points from their presentation. Thank you to the whole class and for the kiddos who helped with the captions!

Ask a second or third grader about the myths of Chinese Lunar New Year...

Nian the evil dragon, villagers scaring away people-eating dragons and plant-eating lions... saving their villages!

...About the ways the Lunar New Year is celebrated...

Lion and dragon dances! Oranges, apples, and red envelopes (with a penny, not $3! ) fireworks!

...about the 12 animals of the Lunar Calendar and...

how Lunar New Year is celebrated in other parts of Asia, like Vietnam. Fortune Cookies? Ask a 2-3er for REAL story!

Three-Band Sample - Notes from the Music Room

The 4th grade class had a terrific opportunity to travel to Kennett High for a sampling of 3 bands:  concert band; jazz band; and drumline. The high school students put on a fantastic show! It was exciting (and moving) to witness their many talents and high enthusiasm under the direction of Terese Davison. It made me look forward to their upcoming Drumline shows and their spring concert as well as the day our students have the opportunity to be a part of the amazing energy in their music department. Thank you Mrs. Weeder for making this trip happen!      ~Miss Melis

Notes from the Principal

Dear Jackson Community,

Next week our annual school district budget hearing occurs at 5:30 pm in the Whitney Center. This is the meeting where we review the budget for the public so they may be well informed to vote at the Annual District meeting in March. I am excited that we will put forward a warrant article to support installation of some new playground equipment. Our playground is not ADA accessible in addition to being quite old and well loved. It is well past time to replace these aged structures. Our playground committee has been supported  by parent Cristine Campa, a professional landscape architect, and we have some big plans! Come hear about it next week and then be prepared to come and lend your vote in support of this effort on March 2, 2023, at the annual meeting.

Enjoy the fresh snow this weekend,

Gayle

Notes from the Principal

Hello Families,

We have wanted some snow and it looks like mother nature intends to deliver! This upcoming weekend the fifth grade parents with  help from Genn Anzaldi and the Valley Originals will provide lunch for the Freeman Frost White Mountain Classic ski race on Saturday. This  event serves as a primary fundraiser for the 6th grade trip and so is important to our students. Many thanks to Ms Hill, Miss Susan, Genn Anzaldi, and the parents who volunteered to help!

Please stay tuned to the weather and notifications from the school.  If we have a delay instead of no school tomorrow we WILL SKI! So lots of moving parts and if-then scenarios...IF we need a remote day Monday watch for an email from your child's teachers with schedules, etc. Teachers spent some time today preparing the children for logging on but let them know if you are having trouble!

Thanks for your support and flexibility!

Computer science in 2/3 and Grade 4

Students in Mrs. Robert's grade 2/3 and Mrs. Heysler's grade 4 have been learning computer science on Code.org.

Code.org is a fun, creative platform for learning computer science and basic coding to create interactive animations, games, or apps. One of the best ways to encourage your child to learn more about coding is to ask your child to explain what they're learning and show you a project they are proud of by logging in using their Google Classroom. You could also watch one of these videos together. Students in K/1 and 5/6 will also have the opportunity to join in the fun very soon. ~ Cyndy Engvall, JGS Technology Facilitator

Now that the winter concert is over chorus is an option for students K-6. Here at JGS we know that singing is beneficial to student learning, growth and development, so we encourage all students to participate.

Chorus meets on Thursdays, directly after ASM, from 9:00- 9:30.

Students will start attending chorus this week: 1/5.

If your student would like to opt out of chorus he/she will need parental permission. We will send your student to chorus unless we hear from you. You may contact Mrs. Weeder: l_weeder@sau9.org, send a note or call school if you have questions/concerns or would like to opt out.

Thank you!

Mrs. Weeder
