On March 22 - 24, 2024, the MUN student conference KOMUN took place in Košice, Slovakia, where 6 students from classes 10A and 11B took part.
Kosice MUN is a simulation taking place at the Technical University of Kosice. There the students apply their political, intercultural, diplomatic and English language learning skills in a scenario-based game in which they modelled the work of the United Nations Organization for three days. Within this strategic game setting they represented a country in form of an ambassadorship with a concise strategic goal of both furthering their countries agenda in communication with other countries as well as solving given crisis scenarios. They do so by writing speeches to be held in committees of students, writing UN policy pieces which mirror actual UN policies and decisions and coordinating their countries' missions in various committees amongst each other. During this process they are mixed with international students and therefore do not only apply their knowledge of English but also practice their intercultural skills, in order to be able to further their agenda within the game.
The first day of the conference started with the opening ceremony in the library of Košice University of Technology. The delegates gave opening speeches, after which they went to panel debates, where four hours were devoted to discussions and the search for solutions at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Technical University of Košice, where the committee sessions were held.
The second day of the conference was mainly focused on making and improving the documents for the General Assembly resolution to be held the next day. Everyone repeated their ideas from the previous days' committee sessions and expressed their opinions. After a delicious lunch break, two more committee sessions followed, during which debates were held, debating was practiced and fun was had in each other's company.
The last day of the conference was held at the General Assembly in the Aula Maxima of the Technical University of Košice. Each committee presented its resolution documents and delegates had the opportunity to speak, either for or against the resolutions. Four of the six resolution documents submitted were successfully ratified. During the closing ceremony, the top three delegates from each committee were awarded. In addition, those present had the honor of listening to speeches by Rastislav Trnka, Chairman of the Košice Municipality Region, and Dalma Sophie Mitríková, Deputy General Secretary of KOMUN. After the general meeting, group photos were taken, and a friendly farewell was said to other members of the conference.
The KOMUN conference in Slovakia was not only educational but also fun. It was an Erasmus+ group mobility that provided valuable insights into international diplomacy, negotiation techniques, and the complexities of global issues. Through engaging discussions and collaboration with peers from diverse backgrounds, they learned the importance of diplomacy, compromise, and effective communication in solving complex problems. In addition, they improved their research skills and deepened their understanding of the positions of different countries on global issues. All this knowledge will be very useful for the participants of our school, because already in April, our school's MUNOT conference will be held, where, enriched with these experiences, they will conduct new discussions and contribute to the organization of the conference. The students were accompanied by MUN directors and MUNOT teachers Alexander Voss and Lorenz Frankenschmidt.
