30.-31. May, the students of the architecture elective course participated in the Erasmus+ group mobility in Helsinki, where they were hosted by the Etelä-Tapiolan lukio highschool in Espoo, Finland.
The focus of the program was familiarization with various architectural objects, workshops and visits to exhibitions in museums, a joint program at the Etelä-Tapiolan school and a visit to the architectural firm Studio Puisto (https://studiopuisto.fi/en/home/).
On the first day in Helsinki, we got to know the students of our partner school and their supervisor, German language teacher Mari Grassel. The students introduced their school, the peculiarities of studying in Finland and school life. After that, they participated in workshops together at the EMMA Museum of Modern Art located in the same building. Under the guidance of wonderful instructors, the students visited various exhibitions and were able to express their personal creativity through drawing and modeling. Tapio Wirkkala's plywood sculptures were particularly interesting from the point of view of form and function. At the end, they discussed and presented the results of their workshop to each other.
After that, the day continued at Aalto University of Design, Art and Architecture, where we were given a tour of the building, introduced to the specialties and workspaces, and talked about study opportunities at Aalto University. The introduction was conducted by Hanna Karkku, coordinator of international relations at Aalto University.
The next day we started our project at Studio Puisto architecture office, which is one of the best examples of sustainable architecture practitioners in Finland and in the world. We visited their office in a lovely Art Nouveau building in Kruununhaka district, which surprised us with its many rooms and size. Architect Sampsa Palva introduced the office, the architect's profession and work. The students could ask and discuss the topics of sustainable architecture and the future of architecture and ask about various projects of Studio Puisto.
Next, we headed to the Finnish Architecture Museum, where we visited an exhibit that focused on mass housing construction in Finland in the 1970s. At the same time, a rehearsal of the sound installation was held in the museum, conducted by musician Tiia Roivanen. On both days, we visited several architectural objects in Helsinki (Allas, Kamppi Chapel, Kaljukirik, Oodi Library, Helsinki Central Railway Station, Helsinki Kaisatalo Library, Amos Rex Museum, Kiasma, etc.), where the students could introduce each other to the history, function and form of buildings, materials, architects, etc. Of course, after the presentation, there was also a tour of the buildings. The last destination of the day was the Kiasma Art Museum and its exhibitions.
We are very happy about our new partner school in Helsinki (Etelä-Tapiolan lukio), with which we definitely plan to continue cooperation in the future.
