Qualifying Life Events

An IRS qualifying life event or QLE is a change in your circumstances that will require changes to your health insurance.  A QLE allows an employee to make changes or purchase new health insurance policies outside of the annual Open Enrollment period.  Employees are responsible for notifying the Benefits Department of any benefits change due to a qualifying life event within 30 calendar days of the event.   Coverage is effective first of the month following the event date.

Legal marital status including marriage, domestic partnership, death of spouse, divorce, legal separation, or annulment

Number of dependent children including birth of a baby, adoption, placement for adoption, medical child support order or death of a dependent

Employment status including termination or commencement of employment by the employee, spouse or dependent

Work schedule including a reduction or increase in hours of employment by the employee, spouse or dependent, or commencement or return from an unpaid leave of absence

A change in dependent's eligibility status including attainment of age 26 or loss of coverage

Change in your residence or worksite, which causes a loss or gain in coverage for the employee, spouse or dependent

Loss of other group health plan coverage for yourself, or your dependents (including spouse), or losing coverage under a state's premium assistance program through Medicaid or Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Riverside USD is required to verify that ALL dependents (including spouses, domestic partners and children) enrolled in district health plans are eligible for coverage.  Verification requirements are completed to preserve our highly competitive benefits programs, and maintain lower costs while retaining rich insurance coverage.

If you are adding NEW dependents, we are required to collect verification documentation and maintain accurate records.  If you have experienced a Qualifying Life Event (divorce, marriage or birth/adoption of a child) you must provide supporting documentation (contact the Benefits Department to see what documents can be used temporarily until State Certified copies are received).

REMEMBER!! You are responsible for notifying the Benefits Department within 30 calendar days of any qualifying life event that would cause a change in benefit status including a COBRA eligibility change.  If you exceed this 30 day special enrollment period, you must wait for the next open enrollment period to make any changes.
