AP Art History

COURSE DESCRIPTION

AP Art History is designed to provide the same benefits to secondary school students as those provided by an introductory college course in art history: an understanding and enjoyment of architecture, sculpture, painting and other art forms within historical and cultural contexts. We learn about the cultures of our world through analyzing objects. In the course, students examine major forms of artistic expression from the past and present and from a variety of cultures. This class is lecture and discussion based (not studio art based). All students are required to take the AP exam in May.

STANDARDS & WEIGHTS

There are many different aspects to a visual art grade. We use the National Core Art Standards to design, teach, and assess our curriculum:

  • RESPONDING- Understanding and evaluating how the arts convey meaning (50%)
  • CONNECTING- Relating artistic ideas and work with personal meaning and external context (35%)
  • PERFORMING/PRESENTING/PRODUCING- Realizing artistic ideas and work through interpretation and presentation (10%)
  • CREATING- conceiving and developing new artistic ideas and work (5%)

ROUTINE WORK

For each style of art that we cover, students complete the following:

  • Chapter Questions and Vocabulary
  • Note Cards with Individual Images, labels, and descriptions
  • Chapter Summaries
