Interventions, what we provide

Intervention Delivery

Walk-In Support, Crisis Intervention, Resources & Case Management

Brief walk-in support is available for students that are experiencing immediate distress during the school day. All students are required to present a wellness center break pass from their teacher and sign in at the front desk of the wellness center. In addition, the wellness staff work collaboratively with families, the school counselors, administration, teachers, school psych team, the Student Resource Officer and community agencies for case management and crisis intervention support students, families and school staff.

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is provided by a qualified mental health professional. Counseling is based on need and assessed within the first one to two sessions. Not all students who are referred for individual counseling will necessarily meet criteria for individual treatment. Students who do not meet criteria may be referred to small group counseling, check-in support, case management or referred to a community agency.

Group Counseling

Group counseling is provided by qualified mental health professionals employed by RJUHSD or through community partnerships. Group counseling is an effective practice with teens to address social skills development, anxiety and depression, substance use and for peer support in navigating the high school experience.

Attendance Support

Attending school is not only very important for students success but it is also mandatory by law. However, we understand that students and families often have barriers that prohibit school attendance. Through Wellness we offer supports and resources for students and parents to address those barriers and support students full attention and engagement at school everyday.

Tobacco & Substance Use Prevention

The tobacco and substance use prevention team is committed to providing students, families and the community with the facts needed to make safe and informed choices. RJUHSD is committed to supporting student, even when student choose to use at school. There will be consequences for breaking school rules but those can be minimized when students participate in alternatives to suspension. Motivational Interviewing is an evidence based practice used as part of a harm reduction model for substance use. Teen Intervene is a proven intervention and used by trained staff to help students address early stages of substance use. Forward Thinking Journals are used in an individual or group setting to help teens address chronic substance use. If you or someone you know is ready to look at their relationship with substances we are here and this service is confidential.

Classroom Presentations

Mental health staff present information to students in the classroom setting to provide them with ways to recognize signs of developing mental health problems, address the relationship between mental health, substance abuse, and other negative coping behaviors, as well as the negative impact of stigma and cultural attitudes toward mental illness. Because teens spend most of their day at school, it just makes sense to have mental health awareness and education become part of the curriculum. When we empower students with knowledge, and encourage dialogue, students will be able to get the help they need. Topics Include:

Academic Stress & Test Anxiety Stress Management During School Closure Teen Self-Esteem Teen Consent

Social Media & Mental Health Teen Substance Use

Staff Presentations

Training school staff on mental health is paramount to ensuring not only teachers' own mental health and their ability to provide support for students suffering, but in also identifying the warning signs of mental health challenges in others. Thus, the school-based mental health model is a collaborative approach that brings clinical knowledge and services to the child and consultation, training and intervention support to educators.
