Visa and Immigration Matters　

• Rikkyo University will apply for the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) on behalf of the incoming exchange students.

• After the Japanese Immigration Bureau has issued the COE, Rikkyo will send the COE to the students.

• Upon receipt of the COE, incoming exchange students must obtain a College Student Visa at the nearest Japanese embassy/consulate prior to their departure to Japan. Contact the nearest Japanese embassy/consulate for more information regarding visa application procedure. 

• Students cannot participate in the exchange program or be enrolled at Rikkyo under a Temporary Visitor Visa.

• 入学が決定した留学生に代わり、立教大学が日本の出入国在留管理庁に対して「在留資格認定証明書（以下、COE）」 の交付を申請する。

• 出入国在留管理庁からCOEが交付され次第、立教大学は出願者本人宛に送付する。

• 出願者は「在留資格認定証明書」を受け取り後、来日前に最寄りの日本公館にて「留学」ビザを申請する。「留学」ビザ取得手続きの詳細は、最寄りの日本公館に問い合わせること。 

• 短期滞在（観光）のビザでは、特別外国人学生として本学に在籍することはできない。

• As Special International Students, the maximum period you are allowed to stay on a Ryugaku (Student) visa is either 6 months, 12 months (1 year) or 15 months. If you wish to renew the permission to stay by extending your academic program, you will need to submit a visa extension application to the Immigration Bureau. You can submit the application for visa renewal three months prior to the expiration date of your visa at any regional or branch office of the Immigration Bureau. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the International Office. 

• Regardless of the period of stay shown on your Ryugaku (Student) visa, your residential status is terminated automatically once you complete your study program at Rikkyo. You must change your visa status to an appropriate category if you intend to extend your stay after the completion of your study program at Rikkyo.

• 特別外国人学生として、在留資格「留学」で認められる在留期間は通常6ヶ月、1年、1年3ヶ月のいずれかです。留学期間を延長するなどして在留期間を更新する場合は、入国管理局へ在留期間更新申請をし、許可を受けることが必要です。在留期限が満了する3ヶ月前から申請できますので、入国管理局(同支局・出張所も可)で在留期間の更新手続きを行ってください。詳しくは国際センターで相談してください。 

• 在留期間が残っていても、立教大学での留学が終了すると「留学」の資格は無効になります。留学期間終了後、速やかに帰国しない場合は、適切な在留資格に変更する必要がありますので、事前に国際センターに相談してください。

• International students on Ryugaku (Student) visas need to apply in advance for the permission from the Immigration Bureau in order to be allowed to work part-time during their stay in Japan. With the permit, International Students may work part-time for up to 28 hours per week (8 hours per day during official university holidays). 

• It is illegal to exceed these working hours or to work without a permit. Violations are subject to severe penalties by the Immigration Bureau and may lead to the deportation of offenders. You can apply for permission to work even if you have not received a part-time job offer yet. 

• If you are considering working in Japan, it is recommended that you apply for the permission in advance. When you enter Japan for the first time and are granted to stay on Ryugaku (Student) visas, you may apply for a part-time work permit at the port of entry (those who are entering Japan with a re-entry permit are not eligible).

• 在留資格「留学」の留学生がアルバイトをするためには、入国管理局から資格外活動許可を受けなければなりません。資格外活動許可を受けることによって、通常は週28時間以内、本学が定める休業期間中は1日8時間以内の範囲でアルバイトすることができます。

•  許可を受けずにアルバイトを開始したり、定められた時間を超えた場合は、資格外活動違反で罰せられ、日本での留学生活を続けることができなくなります。

•  どんなアルバイトをするか決まっていなくても申請することができますので、今後アル バイトをしたいと思っている人はあらかじめ許可を申請しておきましょう。 在留資格「留学」で初めて日本に入国する場合には、到着空港での入国審査時に、資格外活動許可を申請することもできます（再入国の場合にはできません）。

If you leave Japan temporarily during your period of stay, you do not need to obtain a re-entry permit in case you will return to Japan within one year to engage in the same activity. By showing your residence card when you leave Japan, you will be able to re-enter Japan within one year. (This is called the “special re-entry permit system”).  Be sure to present your resident card and fill out “Embarkation Card for Reentrant” at departure.

一時帰国や旅行などにより日本を離れる場合、出国から1年以内に活動を継続するために再入国をするのであれば、原則として再入国許可を受ける必要がありません。出国の際に在留カードを提示することで1年以内の再入国が可能となります。（この制度を「みなし再入国許可」といいます。）出国する際に、必ず在留カードを提示し、再入国用EDカード（再入国出国記録カード）を記入してください。
