Dick graduated in 1955. He entered the United States Air Force and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering with an Architectural option from the University of Wyoming. He also attended undergraduate business classes at the University of Washington and Eastern Washington University. Dick’s community service involves working with the Boy Scouts of America as Vice President in charge of camping on the Boy Scout Council Executive Board where he was responsible for Boy Scout camp facilities. He was appointed to the Spokane Airport Board eleven years ago and has donated countless hours as Board Chairman and as a member of the Engineering Committee. Dick has also worked on the Bridge Building Contest at John R. Rogers High School and often speaks to the students. He declined to list the certificates, plaques, and awards that he has received except to say that he has received the Silver Beaver Award given by the Boy Scouts of America honoring service and dedication. Dick feels that this is the one award that he received because it made a difference to the young people that he was involved with.
Hank graduated in 1945. He received his BA from Eastern Washington University and his MA from Whitworth College. Hank was a teacher, coach, and school administrator for the state of Washington for 37 years. His honors include: The WIIAA Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, The Northwest Association of Community Colleges Coaches Hall of Fame, Inland Northwest Hall of Fame, Inland Empire Softball Hall of Fame, and several awards connected with WIAA State B Basketball. Hank’s community service includes working with Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Master of Ceremonies at Officials Dinner and Players Breakfast, Special Olympics, Wheelchair Basketball, and has coached community college basketball state champions at Columbia Basin in Pasco and Spokane Falls, and has been Director of State B Basketball.
Don graduated in 1944, the last of four brothers at Rogers. He was Vice President of the student body, played football for four years, and baseball for four years. Don was on the all-city football team in 1943. He was in the Navy Air Corps from 1944 to 1946 and attended Whitworth College in 1946 and 1947 where he played football and baseball. Don married Rogers’ graduate Shirlee Engle in 1948—they have been married for over 58 years. Don and Shirlee have one daughter, Deborah. They also raised two children, Tere and John, from Hutton Settlement as their own. Don and Shirlee have six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. After working for Star Machinery in Seattle for ten years, Don returned to college attending Eastern Washington University in 1958 and 1959. He received a degree in Secondary Education and taught for the West Valley School District for 28 years where he also coached football, baseball, and wrestling. Don and Shirlee volunteered for Meals on Wheels for 16 years and for the Cancer Drive for 18 years. Don has helped organize John R. Rogers’ Alumni monthly luncheons since 1946 and has been a member of the committee that organizes the 5-Year All-School Reunions.
Rich graduated in 1963. He received an M.Ed. in Athletic Administration from Seattle Pacific University and a BA in Physical Education and a BA in Economics from Western Washington University. Rich has been in the field of education since 1972 serving in various capacities at Skagit Valley College, Seattle School District & Metro League, Washington State University, Yakima Valley Community, and Spokane Falls Community College. His community service includes the following: Spokane Chase Youth Commission, Spokane School District Equity Council, South Hill Kiwanis Service Club, Hillyard Kiwanis Service Club, and the Rogers Class of 1963 Planning Committee. In 2004-05 Rich served as the Greater Spokane Area Lt. Governor for the Kiwanis Clubs in the region/division. His honors include Distinguished Club Secretary and President for South Hill Kiwanis and work and contribution to the Chase Youth Commission & Teen Advisory Council. Rich runs competitively in Masters Track and recently won a gold medal at the National Masters Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Hawaii. In 2006 Rich was featured in an article in the Spokesman Review for his running success. Rich is retired from the US Naval Reserve/Supply Corp and holds the rank of Captain.
