Barb was the valedictorian at John R. Rogers High School in 1975. She received her BS and her MS from Washington State University. Barb has taught at John R. Rogers High School for 24 years, during which time she has also served as a Class and ASB Advisor as well as serving as a coach for gymnastics, volleyball, and tennis. Her community involvement includes the following: Meals on Wheels Volunteer for 17 years, Foster Parent to 17 children, High School and College Volleyball Official, Softball Umpire, Project Coordinator of Project UNIQUE ’81, Food Bank Volunteer, Omega House Volunteer, Hoopfest Court Monitor, First Night Volunteer, North Hill Christian Church Elder, and Spokane Valley Church and Professional Handbell Player. Barb’s awards and honors include the following: graduating Cum Laude from WSU, Volleyball Officiating Awards, Softball Umpiring Awards, SAVRA Referee of the Year, SSUA Umpire of the Year, 2003 GSL Girls’ Tennis Coach of the Year, and the Chase Youth Award in 1999 for her work with high-risk youth.
Dennis graduated in 1968. He is the Commander General of the 24th Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, Kansas. Dennis is a 1972 graduate of Gonzaga University and earned an MBA from Washington State University. He is also a graduate of the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA. Dennis was commissioned into the United States Army as a Cavalry officer upon graduation from Gonzaga. He has held a variety of command and staff assignments in the United States and overseas including Germany, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Bosnia, and Kosovo. Dennis has served on both the Army Staff and the Joint Staff in the Pentagon in Washington, DC and as the Comptroller of the US Army Forces Command in Atlanta, GA with a $4 billion dollar budget. His commands include the 1st Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment during combat operations in Desert Shield and Desert Storm and the 2nd Cavalry Regiment to which he deployed to Bosnia in 1997-98. Dennis was the Assistant Division Commander for the 1st Armored Division in Germany and was the Commander General of the Multinational Brigade-East in Kosovo in 2000. Today, as 24th Division Commander, Dennis leads a combination of active and National Guard armored brigades all of which have deployed in support of the Global War on Terrorism. Dennis is married to the former Diane Grayhek, also from Spokane, and they have three daughters.
Arthur graduated in January 1937. He was president of the senior class. He entered the Flying Cadets of the U.S. Air Force after three years of college at Eastern Washington University. He received his commission as a 2nd Lt. a week after Pearl Harbor on December 13, 1941. Arthur was assigned to be a pilot of the B17E, “Hellzapoppin” in the 97th Bomb Group, 341st Bomb Squad of the 8th Air Force. They were the first group in England to bomb German-occupied France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. On Mission #15 on October 21, 1942, to Lorient Sub Penns, only 15 out of 107 planes made it over the target. The Hellzapoppin fought off at least a dozen attacks by German fighter planes and returned safely. Three B17’s were shot down and six others were damaged. In 1942 Arthur was assigned to flying duties in North Africa as part of the 12th Air Force, Operation Torch. On November 20, 1942 as Art and eight of his crew members were standing on the tarmac in Maison Blanch in Algeria they were gunned down by enemy fire. Arthur’s daughter, Karen, was born a month later on December 27, 1942. His widow, Helen Joy Hughes Schaefer, set up a $25,000 scholarship through the Foundation Northwest to be given to a worthy Rogers’ student to help with first-year college expenses.
Chris graduated in 1971. She attended Spokane Community College and Eastern Washington University. Chris is currently the principal at Shaw Middle School here in Spokane. She has served as a Girl Scout Leader, Neighborhood Education Team member (which is a collaborative team of neighborhood, community, schools, and churches to benefit the West Central Area), United Way volunteer, and was a member of the Instructional Equity Citizens Advisory Council. For the past few years Chris has been deeply involved in the Spokane Hillyard Rotary. She is involved in fundraising and selecting three $1,000 scholarships annually for Rogers High School students and she created a literacy project to provide books for every 4th grader in the Rogers’ area, which is taking place this school year. As Rotary President, Chris has become involved in Interact and helps promote that club’s development at Rogers; the international service includes monetary donations to projects like Project Smile, school clothes for children in Honduras, and building wells in Kenya. She is a sustaining member of Rotary, current president, committee chairperson, and an advocate for Rogers High School. Chris is a liaison with Rogers DECA to provide monetary support from Rotary and to provide community service opportunities for the DECA students. Her honors include Staffer of the Year for Spokane Public Schools in 1995, the Equity Award from the Spokane Public Schools Equity Committee in 1997, Spokane Hillyard Rotary President Elect in 2003-04, and Spokane Hillyard Rotary President in 2004-05.
Bob graduated in 1956. He attended Stanford University, where he earned a BA in Communications and Journalism in 1960. Bob had a 41-year career in the newspaper business during which time he was recognized as one of the leading track and field writers. Bob’s career included 19 years at The Spokesman-Review, as copy editor, sports writer, and executive sports editor and 22 years at the Tacoma News Tribune as sports writer and section editor and eventually senior copy editor and newsroom manager, retiring in 2001. His work also appeared in Track & Field News, the Sporting News, NCAA Track & Field Guide, Touchdown Publications, the Eugene Register-Guard, Associated Press, and the Columbian. Bob covered two Olympic Games, five Olympic Trials, and 15 NCAA track meets and served as president of the Track and Field Writers of America. He also won first and second place awards for sports feature writing in regional Society of Professional Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi Excellence in Journalism competitions. Bob’s community involvement included the Inland Empire Sports Writers and Broadcasters as president and awards chairman and the I.E. Sports Awards Banquet Steering Committee. He received two Greater Spokane Sports Association Awards and in 1987 became the first winner of the Richard Pratt Award. In Puyallup and Tacoma Bob is involved in the American Field Service Exchange Student Program and Star Track.
