The English Department offers a comprehensive and challenging, four-year language arts program to fulfill the needs and interests of all RHAM students. Students need 4 credits in English for graduation and most courses listed here award English credit under the umbrella of humanities. As freshmen, sophomores and juniors, students take full year courses designed to develop and refine reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing skills. As seniors, students may select from either one full-year or two semester long courses to meet graduation requirements. In addition to their yearlong courses as part of the 11th grade curriculum, juniors are also offered the opportunity to enroll in additional one-semester courses open to grades 11 and 12. Students in grades 9 and 10 are also invited to take the journalism elective.
The AP Capstone Program is housed in the English Department, but neither AP Seminar or AP Capstone count towards an English credit for graduation. AP Seminar satisfies a humanities credit, while AP Research could satisfy humanities or STEM, depending on the topic of research pursued.
During the final year in high school, seniors are provided with several options to fulfill graduation requirements, depending on their abilities, needs, interests and plans for the future. Students wanting the challenge of an honors or college level course may select one of three rigorous full year courses: AP Literature and Composition, Honors World Literature, or UConn English 1007.
Students in all levels have multiple options to fulfill graduation requirements. In the one option, they may enroll in a full year course. In the second option, students may opt to take two one-semester courses. Students who require additional assistance with reading and writing skills may elect the full-year course, Themes in Literature. In addition to fulfilling graduation requirements, students are encouraged to take elective courses during their junior and senior years to pursue areas of interest. **
