This course challenges the academically talented, motivated, and independent student with intensive instruction in English language arts. In the study of literature, students will read a variety of multi-cultural works from all genres. Class discussions, compositions, and individual and group presentations provide students with numerous opportunities to further refine their critical and analytical reading skills. Students will receive intensive writing instruction as they practice skills in creating informative, argumentative, and critical essays as well as the research paper. Emphasis is on the writing process as well as patterns of organization and structure of each essay type. Because English 9 Honors is an intensive, fast-paced and challenging course, students must be strong readers, have excellent organizational, time management and study skills, and be independent and highly motivated learners who are willing to grapple with complex issues. There is summer reading work that must be completed prior to the start of the school year. This work is graded.
