Contemporary Topics in Literature is a semester-long elective English course with a focus on reading and engaging with contemporary topics, themes, and texts. In the course, students further develop skills in reading, discussing, writing, and analyzing. Course units will revolve around contemporary and culturally diverse topics while engaging with novels, plays, short stories, essays, and poems. Engaging with these texts, students will identify the universality and the uniqueness of the human experience. Students will demonstrate their understanding of and engagement with texts through a variety of assessments including written essays, projects, and group dialogues. The course is designed to promote reading for pleasure, appreciation for cultural diversity, and insight into human nature as it applies to the evolving human race in the 21st Century.
