During this one-semester course, students will explore Native American experiences through the lens of Native American writing, visual media, and oral tradition, with an emphasis on contemporary Indigenous voices. Students will engage with Indigenous origin and traditional stories, historical documents, modern fiction, poetry, non-fiction, news, film, and television. Students will write, create, and present both creative and analytical pieces. Issues such as culture, identity, community, and stereotype will be addressed. By the end of the course, students will have a deeper appreciation of Native American literature, a better understanding of the historical and contemporary struggles faced by Native American communities, and an increased awareness of the importance of diverse voices in literature and the arts.
