DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE
Foreign Language French will be offered at IGCSE as an optional subject. Students wishing to take IGCSE French should have a genuine interest in learning a foreign language.
The aim of IGCSE Foreign Language French is to develop an ability to use the language effectively for purposes of practical communication. The course is based on the linked language skills of Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing, and these are built on as students’ progress through their studies. The syllabus also aims to offer insights into the culture and civilisation of countries where the language is spoken, thus encouraging positive attitudes towards language learning and towards speakers of Foreign languages.

This course is suitable for students who:
Understand and respond to Spoken Language
Understand and respond to Written Language
Communicate in Speech, showing knowledge of a range and variety of vocabulary and applying the grammar and structures of the target language accurately
Communicate in writing, showing knowledge of a range and variety of vocabulary and applying the grammar and structures of the target language accurately
The Examination will consist of four papers:
Paper 1 Listening (45 minutes).
Candidates listen to the recordings and answer questions based on the heard material
Paper 2 Reading and Writing (1 hour). A variety of question types are used to include multiple-choice, box-ticking, matching exercises (in which candidates choose an appropriate letter from a list), grid filling.
Paper 3 Speaking (15 minutes). The Speaking test will comprise three parts: Role Play tasks, Topic Conversation and General Conversation.
Paper 4 Writing (1 hour). Candidates are required to list 8 items in French on different topics and will be expected to produce two pieces of continuous writing of 80-90 words and 130-140 words in length, respectively.
All students will be entered for the Extended Paper for which the available grades are A* to E.
For the final assessment, a written examination will be conducted in May/June 2023.
A French Speaking component will be assessed as part of the final grade which will be due for submission in April 2023.
