IGCSEs are considered a stepping stone in a student’s education. The qualification indicates the levels a student has reached at age 16.
Students seeking admission into U.K. universities cannot do so with only an IGCSE certificate. Students will require A-levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma to gain entry to a degree course at university, which they achieve at the end of Year 13, aged 18. A Bachelor’s Degree in most subjects in the UK takes 3 years (most Bachelor’s Degrees in Nigeria will take 4 years).
Other pathways for studying at university are made available with the IGCSE qualification such as completing a degree foundation year at a qualifying university. Subject to satisfactory performance in the foundation year, entry is granted into the first year of a Bachelor’s Degree program. University Foundation Programs can also be completed in recognised colleges such as The Regent College or U.K. colleges.
University entry requirements may vary between global regions. Students wishing to gain admission into a university in Nigeria may apply to do so after IGCSE, and will require the following:
5 subjects passed at Grades A* to C
The subjects passed MUST include Mathematics and English
A Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board UME examination score acceptable to the university
Parents with questions about entry to universities overseas or in Nigeria should contact The Regent Secondary School's Placement Officer or The Regent College's admissions officer.
