DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE
This course is compulsory for all students.
The English (First Language) Syllabus will develop students’ ability to communicate accurately, appropriately and effectively in speech and writing. Students will be encouraged to use relevant vocabulary, to employ correct grammar, spelling and punctuation, and to display a sense of style and audience.
All Year 10 students will sit the IGCSE English (First Language) examination at the end of Year 11.

KEY KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Students will learn to:
Understand and respond appropriately to what they see, hear and experience.
Enjoy the full variety of the English language.
Complement their other studies by developing general skills such as the ability to analyse, synthesise, and make inferences, order facts and present opinions.
Promote personal development and an understanding of self and others.
There are two levels of this examination:
IGCSE Core (Grades Available: C to G)
IGCSE Extended (Grades Available: C- A*)
Students will be entered for either the Core or Extended examination, depending on their ability and progress during Years 10 – 11. This will be at the teacher’s discretion.
Students taking the Extended Option will also be strongly advised to study the IGCSE Literature Course over Years 10 – 11. These two courses complement each other.
