Google Earth

Though many students may think of Google Earth as just a version of Google Maps, there are many ways that Google Earth can really be used to look at some of the various layers (spheres) of our globe. By adding and removing layers (bottom left corner of the image to the left), you are able to show the students visual representations of the various spheres discussed in this unit.

In what National Geographic calls a "Collection" for educators, here you can find some great resources from around the NGS site with lots of information not only on the hydrosphere, but many of the other spheres as well.

What this tool can really be used for is showing students similarities in various spheres (eg. atmospheric temperatures, ocean water temperatures, melting of glaciers over time). As an example, in the picture to the right, all areas in blue (which includes Alberta) have the same average annual atmospheric temperatures. This can make it interesting to talk to students about the similarities in locations such as Chile, China, Mongolia, parts of the USA, and parts of Russia to Alberta.
