Measuring Properties
Bill Nye The Science Guy - Measurement

Synopsis: This video not only gives examples of measurement, but it also explores the importance of measurement. Proving that Bill Nye has a background in engineering, he repeatedly discusses the advantages of the metric system in science. It could be argued that this video places a greater emphasis on the importance of measurements over understanding units of measurements themselves.
Hunting For Properties (Crash Course Part 1)

Synopsis: This video is a good demonstration of not only the comparative sizes of objects, but how to properly use a tool like a measuring tape to measure an object's dimensions or a scale to measure an object's mass. This video leads in nicely to the second video to really look at this topic (below).
Measurement Mystery (Crash Course Part 2)

Synopsis: This is a continuation of the previous video, in which students are directed to use metric units to make an inference about an unknown object. This video could be a great way to teach students how to begin playing a game like Twenty Questions through the use of measurements.
Mass vs. Weight

Synopsis: I'll start out by saying there were many videos that I needed to filter through, as so many people on YouTube are based in the USA, where they love using their SAE measurements instead of metric measurements. Now, this video does a great job explaining that mass and weight are different, and sticks almost exclusively to metric units, but then, near the end, incorrectly explains that weight is in kilograms; this is incorrect as kilograms is mass, and newtons (or pounds) are weight. If you're alright with this one error, the rest of this video does give some good exaplnations to measurement.

Synopsis: Though this video certainly takes the emphasis away from standardized units, which could be argued to be essential for measurement in science, the way that the main character of this video, and his sidekick (a piece of cheese) teach about non-standard measurement is most engaging. There's no doubt that this video deserves the exclamation mark that it put in the title!

Synopsis: By listening to the host of this show have a full discussion with her dog, Professor Ginger, you can have your students make predictions about the relative weights of various objects from around a house that this dog brings to the balance scale.Â
Changing Properties
How Can You Change The Shape of an Object?

Synopsis: What is really great about this video is that it really addresses all the changes outlined by the 2023 Alberta curriculum (with the exception of cutting). Though the video may use a bit of science vocabulary that might seem slightly advanced for Grade 1, as a whole, the video does a great job covering the various changes that can occur to an object.
