In 2019 the UN and FAO announced that the population suffering from obesity, for the first time exceeded the population suffering from hunger; really contradictory situation; thus finding people with obesity and people with malnutrition in the same territory.
What are the causes of being overweight and obese?
The cause of overweight and obesity is an imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended.
In addition to the above, overweight and obesity are also associated with a sedentary lifestyle, poor eating habits, the consumption of foods rich in fat, and the lack of support policies in the health, education, urban planning sectors and on the road to food among others.
The UN and FAO also mention that "Households with fewer resources tend to substitute nutritious food for cheaper ones."
What happens to this sector of the population that is forced to carry out this substitution?
According to UNICEF, one in four children under 5 years of age suffers from chronic malnutrition, which affects direct aspects of their development, the most common being:
-Short stature
-Brain abnormalities
-Poor performance in school
-Other chronic diseases
World Food Day has 3 main objectives:
-Reduce hunger in the world.
-To encourage people to eat healthily, encouraging nutritious food to reach all destinations; that is, they are available to everyone.
-Recognize the work done by all farmers, fishermen and transporters involved in food & beverages.
How to eat healthy food every day?
1.Eat nutritious food, avoid saturated fat, fast food is not the solution
2. Prioritize homemade meals, at home you can have better control of what you consume.
3. Do not get pigeonholed by eating just one type of food, our body needs 40 different nutrients and there is no one food that can cover them all.
4.Consume local and seasonal products, with this you contribute to the local economy, promote a sustainable lifestyle but above all, you contribute to improving your health and caring for the environment.
5.Stay hydrated, water is essential for the proper functioning of our body, apart from helping us to regulate our temperature.
6.Consume fruits and vegetables, they provide many vitamins that help us with disease prevention.
7. Consume small portions, the recommendation is to eat 5 meals a day (3 meals and 2 snacks), so you can consume different foods and the different types of nutrient you need. By eliminating a meal, we can produce a fierce feeling of hunger that forces us to increase our food intake.
