What is COP26 and Why it is important?

COP26 is the official name that refers to the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, which was held for the first time in 1995. As such the COP, is the way in which the Conferences of the parties, and although it is true that the Conference focused on Climate Change is not only held, it is the only conference with more than 150 signatories..

The COP focused on climate change is held every year over the course of two weeks within the month of November; during which world leaders who have signed the environmental treaty called the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) discuss issues related to the climate crisis that affects us today.

All nations are involved in these climate change conferences, yet there are around 190 signatures from world leaders. Despite this small number of participants, decision-making is not limited only to these 190 people, 30,000 experts participate in decision-making who, through panels and debates, establish the positions and actions to be taken.

Why do we need to be interested in COP26?

The most important point is because the pandemic has come to restore priorities; in 2020 this event had to be canceled due to the health crisis we were in. The priority now is to reestablish ourselves globally, but to do so in an environmentally friendly way, joining efforts to control the increase in temperature around the world.

In addition to the above, the COP is important because they follow up on the agreements established in previous years. At the COP, the actions that have been carried out are evaluated, progress is analyzed and new strategies are established to achieve the established agreements, in the stipulated times.

In particular, COP26 followed up on the agreement established at COP21, where the Paris Agreement was established; which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as put a brake on the increase in temperature, which would affect all species, biosecurity, our health and food consumption..
