This wood species is not listed in the CITES Appendices, but is reported by the IUCN as being near threatened. Technically it doesn’t meet the Red List criteria of a vulnerable or endangered species, but is close to qualifying and/or may qualify in the near future. This listing is for the wild populations of the tree: it should be noted that nearly all of the available lumber comes from cultivated trees.
Overall good work ability; it machines well, but be aware to use sharp tools, Blunt tools could result in burn marks on the wood.
Walnut timber is a specialist hardwood that is mainly used for furniture and interior joinery, and home decorations such as turned bowls.
Next to solid logs, pre glued pannels and walnut veneer is also available, paper backed or as standard.
The color of walnut ranges from creamy white in the sapwood to a dark chocolate in the heartwood.
Although severe reactions are quite uncommon, Black Walnut has been reported as a sensitizer. Usually most common reactions simply include eye and skin irritation.

Gemma Squires (CNC digital) was commissioned to make a plaque with the original lettering from the former RCA Sculpture studio in Battersea.
The lettering is designed by Margaret Calvert and is now featured within special collections within the Library of the Frayling building.
The base of the plaque has been made out of walnut.
