Pear

Swiss Pear is a temperate hardwood used for turnery and is an ideal timber for carving. Typically used for umbrella handles, measuring instruments such as set squares and T–squares.

• Pear wood tends to deform and crack during drying. It also loses mass during the drying process.

• When dried, however, pear wood is then stable again and can be further processed without difficulty.

• It is susceptible to cracking and warping, and must therefore be dried and stored with care.

• Pear tree wood is hard and heavy. It has good stability and hardness properties.

• Pear wood is a timber that hasn’t lines running through it, but instead has a colour shift. Swiss Pear is a lumber that gets richer as it oxidizes.

• Pear is only available in fairly small sizes

Pear wood is typically used in the production of noble furniture. Pear wood is also used in instrument making used for the production of flutes or sections of stringed instruments. It is often used in high quality children’s toys and turned furniture legs.
