Secondary Newsletter

Greetings from the Head of Secondary

Dear Parents, Students, and RBIS Community,

As we approach the end of another dynamic term, it's a pleasure to reflect on the enriching experiences our students have had over the past few weeks. Throughout the last month of term 2, our secondary school community delved into the captivating world of poetry and literature.

We celebrated World Book Week, immersing ourselves in the magic of storytelling and the power of imagination. This was followed by a memorable World Book Night, where our Y.6 to 8 students shared their favorite stories and explored the joy of reading together while sleeping at school. Additionally, we marked World Poetry Day, embracing the beauty and creativity of language through various poetry-related activities and competitions.

One of the highlights of the month was our annual Talent Show, where our students showcased their remarkable skills and talents. The top three performers from this event will have the honour of sharing their talents once again at this year's graduation ceremony, a testament to their outstanding abilities.

In the realm of career exploration, our Year 10 to 13 students had the invaluable opportunity to learn about medical careers at a conference. Meanwhile, our Year 8 students demonstrated compassion and empathy by volunteering at Sanam Luang, distributing food to those in need. Additionally, our Year 9 to 10 students had an insightful visit to a game design company, gaining firsthand knowledge of this innovative industry.

Throughout these diverse experiences, our commitment to community service and global citizenship remained strong. House community service projects and Round Square activities continued to thrive, fostering a spirit of empathy, collaboration, and social responsibility among our students.

More details on these events and other exciting happenings can be found in the newsletter sections below.

As we anticipate the upcoming Songkran holiday and Thai New Year, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to you and your family. May this festive season be filled with joy, laughter, and blessings.

Annual Talent Show

From Year 6 to Year 13, we witnessed 10 talented contestants showcase their skills in singing, dancing, piano, violin, harp, and more on Friday the 1st of March. Our students truly amazed us with their passion and dedication!

We are immensely proud of all our participants. It takes courage to step onto a stage and perform in front of your peers and teachers, and each one of them did so with grace and talent.

In third place, we congratulate Hans from Year 13 for his outstanding singing and dancing performance! Coming in second place is San from Year 6, showing talent on the piano beyond his years. And finally, a huge round of applause for our first-place winner, Nokyung from Year 8, who blew us away with her incredible talent on the harp!

As a special reward, the top 3 performers will have the honour of showcasing their talents once again at this year's graduation ceremony!

Congratulations to all the participants and winners! Your hard work and dedication have truly paid off.

World Book Day

On World Book Day, our students transformed into beloved book characters, immersing themselves in reading wonders, igniting lively discussions, and exchanging book recommendations. From the timeless tales of William Shakespeare to the contemporary stories of Jacqueline Wilson, the day they evolved into a journey through literature, fostering a lifelong passion for books. Adding to the festivities, students crafted their own book reviews, which will be proudly displayed in the library. This initiative aims to guide those undecided about their next read, providing personal insights and recommendations from their peers. Moreover, students unleashed their creativity by designing unique bookmarks, adding a personal touch to their reading adventures and making their engagement with books even more exciting!

World Book Night Sleepover

On Friday, March 8th, Ms Reid's annual World Book Night became a unique story, bringing together students from Years 6, 7, and 8. They shared their favourite books, delving into discussions that spanned genres and worlds while also engaging in a brilliantly crafted quiz by Ms Wild that challenged their literary knowledge and fostered a spirited competition. The evening was further enlivened with games and socialising, where laughter and conversations flowed as freely as the pages of a well-loved book. As the night wore on, delicious snacks were savoured and laughter filled the canteen; by morning, a hearty breakfast awaited to fuel their journey home and share their nighttime adventures with their parents.

Ms Reid extends a heartfelt and very special thank you to Ms Wild, the Year 6 teacher, the incredible Ms Carpio and Ms Compoc, whose unwavering support and dedication ensured that every child had a blast and felt safe and cared for. Additionally, a sincere note of gratitude goes to Mr Samran for providing extra security, ensuring peace of mind for everyone involved and contributing significantly to the event's success. This event once again highlighted the magic that books hold in bringing us together, creating memories that, much like the stories we cherish, will be revisited fondly for years to come.

World Poetry Day 2024

Happy Haikus

To commemorate World Poetry Day on March 21st our students studied, read and wrote their own Haiku poetry. The Haiku style of poetry bridges the gap between English and Asian cultures and with International Day on the horizon it also allows our students to be reflective and contemplative of the nature and community around them - and of course around the world!

The staff were overwhelmed by the sheer breadth and depth of empowering responses and had the honour of selecting and voting for poetry submissions in three categories. The winners - who receive book voucher prizes and certificates - are as follows:

EAL and SEN - 1st: Plawaln 2nd: Zaizi 3rd: Kaopun

Key Stage 3 - 1st: Pookie 2nd: Pias 3rd: Haila

Key Stage 4/5 - 1st: Bianca 2nd: Jenny joint 3rd: Win and Pin Pin

Overall, the contest was an outstanding success and our English Department would like to thank EVERYONE for taking part in this fantastic 'community arts' event.

Bangkok Community Help Day (Y.8)

On Tuesday 12th March, our Year 8 students visited the Bangkok Community Help Foundation.

Their mission was to prepare and distribute hot meals to those in need.

Beginning at the foundation's premises on Sukhumvit 10, the students packaged food before heading out to various locations in Bangkok to distribute meals and donate clothing. Their efforts went beyond mere provision, as they also offered smiles and comfort to those they encountered.

This excursion served as an eye-opening experience for our students, raising awareness about the challenges faced by less fortunate individuals in Bangkok. Through fostering empathy and understanding, this action aims to inspire our young minds to become compassionate and active contributors to society.

Visit to a virtual reality game design company - Zero Latency (Y.9-10)

Recently, we were fortunate to visit Zero Latency, a virtual reality company known for creating immersive cooperative experiences. During our visit, students actively participated in a Q&A session, inquiring about the hardware and technology that power these virtual environments.

After this discussion, students had the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in cooperative experiences within the virtual realm. In this setting, they could freely move around inside a spacious room equipped with advanced motion and infrared sensors used for spatial tracking.

The encounter was not only enjoyable but also filled with excitement, providing students with a firsthand look into the emerging world of virtual reality.

Year 7 Chinese

Making Peking Opera Masks

During Chinese Language and Culture class the Year 7 students were introduced to the Peking Opera. The opera, formerly known as "Ping Opera", is one of the most representative types of opera in China, and its history can be traced back to the mid-18th century.

As an important part of Chinese traditional culture, Peking Opera carries rich historical and cultural connotations. We hope that the lessons gave everyone a deeper understanding of Peking Opera. We wanted the students to feel the profoundness and unique charm of Chinese traditional culture by making Peking Opera masks.

Year 8 English

In Year 8 English, we have delved into Acts 3 and 4 of Shakespeare's "Macbeth," focusing on the intriguing use of ghosts to reveal Macbeth's turbulent state of mind. Our exploration began with students closely annotating the extract, a process that allowed them to engage directly with Shakespeare's language and the thematic elements of guilt and paranoia.

Following this in-depth analysis, students embarked on a mini assessment on the topic, demonstrating their understanding of how Shakespeare skillfully employs supernatural elements to reflect the inner turmoil of his characters. This segment of the play provided a rich foundation for discussion and analysis, highlighting the timeless nature of Shakespeare's exploration of human psychology.

Year 9 Geography

Students learned that development is a dynamic process aimed at enhancing people's lives through various changes, such as advancements in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities. They engaged in comparisons between highly developed and poorly developed countries, recognizing that each nation exists at a distinct stage of development. Utilizing indicators, they assessed and quantified development levels, while also examining the geographical, historical, economic, and social factors contributing to disparities in development. Furthermore, students conducted a case study analysis of both a developed nation, such as Singapore, and a developing one, like Malawi, to deepen their understanding of the multifaceted nature of development and the complex interplay of factors influencing it.

What's Going on?

Year 10 IGCSE Computer Science

Up to this point in the year, our Year 10 curriculum has delved deeply into the theoretical aspects of computer science, with a particular emphasis on the study of sensors, emerging technologies, and microprocessors.

This exploration has provided students with a comprehensive understanding of these fundamental concepts and their applications in the ever-evolving field of technology.

To replicate real examination conditions and help students become familiar with the content, we've been actively engaging in the practice of past exam papers. This approach allows students to experience the format and style of questions they may encounter in actual exams, enabling them to build confidence and proficiency in their subject matter.

Year 11 IGCSE Biology

As part of their IGCSE Biology Curriculum this term, our Year 11 students have delved into the fascinating world of Biotechnology and Genetic modification!

They have worked diligently in groups to prepare and deliver captivating presentations on various examples of genetic modification :

-the insertion of human genes into bacteria to produce human proteins

- the insertion of genes into crop plants to confer resistance to herbicides

-the insertion of genes into crop plants to confer resistance to insect pests

-the insertion of genes into crop plants to improve nutritional qualities

Their presentations were absolutely fantastic! 👏🎉 Kudos to them for their hard work and insightful research. Keep shining, Year 11!

Year 12 HSD Fine Art

The students have chosen traditional Thai architecture as their theme for this (and next) year. They were inspired by several structures they encountered during our school trip to Ayutthaya last year. One particular sample caught the students' attention, and they went a long way in using this famous building as the subject for a painting in a lakeside setting. The reflection in the water creates a naturally recognizable composition. A job well done.

  Year 13 PSHE

This term Year 13 have explored a variety of health and wellbeing topics within their PSHE lessons with a view towards taking personal responsibility for their own welfare once they begin higher education at university. With this goal in mind, they have explored a cross-section of different case-studies within which they can self-reflect and identify personal wellbeing needs, as well as engage in leadership activities which seek to strengthen their mental and physical capabilities.

HOUSES @ RBIS

4 houses

The RBIS Houses are designed to embody the values and ethos of our school and are an integral part of our school community.

Our Houses' main aim is to provide every student in each house with a sense of belonging within the school community, opportunities to develop social, intellectual, physical and practical skills, a sense of achievement both inside and outside of the classroom including through the fun and excitement of inter-house competitions.

Students are assigned to one of our four Houses when they join the EY, Primary or Secondary sections of the school; entering a system which is designed to develop an awareness of individual and collective responsibility and opportunities for student leadership. Each house has two designated elected House Captains  (Primary and Secondary) who will act as representatives for all the students in their house throughout the year by: helping coordinate house teams, organise activities and events and represent their house at relevant meetings.

House events at Secondary (March) :

RBIS 23-24 Football Liga - Dragon clench the double

With Win from House Dragon leading as the top goal scorer with 23 goals and carrying his team, the Dragons emerged victorious in both the league and cup finals against the second-placed Lion.

The cup final culminated in a gripping penalty shootout between House Dragon and Lion, extending until both goalkeepers made crucial saves and goals were scored. It was one of the most intense shootouts witnessed, occurring after both teams had equalized during extra time.

Football super cup - Teachers VS. Dragon

A team comprising of teachers squared off against House Dragon in the Super Cup. Despite the teachers clinching the win with fantastic goals, the Dragons staged a slow but steady comeback, showcasing resilience. The match was marked by an abundance of goals, ending with a score of 6 to 5.

RBA - Basketball

The RBIS basketball tournament is underway, with the Dragons already in the finals, eagerly awaiting the clash between the Phoenix and the Lion. Both teams have emerged strong from the playoffs, and now only one decisive game remains to determine the finalist. Phoenix, after a setback in the initial game, has made a comeback.

ROUND SQUARE @ RBIS

RBIS is proud to announce it is a global member member of ROUND SQUARE which is a prestigious international organisation with schools in over 50 countries, across six continents.

It focuses on holistic education practices through the following six key IDEALS:

Internationalism: Students are taught to value and respect all cultures, religions and languages. They learn to see themselves as global citizens and are asked to look beyond gender, class, race, nationality and culture to understand human nature.

Democracy: Freedom of thought and speech is greatly encouraged and appropriate forums and channels of communication are in place for students to voice their views. Students are also taught to appreciate the importance of self-discipline and are trained and expected to share in the responsibility for development of the school.

Environment: Round Square students are expected to demonstrate concern for all natural environments, to be aware of proven problems and to play a practical role in tackling environmental issues. Students are taught the interdependence needed to maintain a healthy relationship between human beings and the planet.

Adventure: Building character through adventure, meeting physical challenges and developing an appreciation of the outdoors: these are all central to Round Square schools.

Leadership: Students are taught that true leadership is found in those whose convictions are rooted in personal responsibility, kindness and justice. Opportunities for student leadership in the school community are fostered extensively.

Service: This is the key element utilised by Round Square schools to prepare students for life through the expectation of serving others. Students commit themselves to local, regional and international service projects.

Round Square related events at Secondary (March) :

We're proud to announce that RBIS is hosting a Round Square collaboration for the first time and inviting other schools to join in an initiative centered around International Women's Day, called "Empowering Voices: Celebrating Women Who Changed the World".  We have invited students of Round Square Schools around the world to join us in celebrating the lives and achievements of remarkable women who have made a significant impact on the world.

By engaging in this project, students will not only learn about the pivotal roles women have played in shaping our history and future but also develop a deeper understanding of the values encapsulated in the Round Square IDEALS, particularly Internationalism, Leadership, and Service. This collaboration is an opportunity to celebrate diversity, encourage empathy, and inspire a new generation of leaders committed to making a positive difference in the world.

Community service at Secondary (March) :

Each year, around 8 million tons of plastic waste from coastal nations end up in the world's oceans.                                                                                                                                                      With 5 recycled plastic bottles we can make one XL T‑shirt, 27 bottles a sweater, 35 we can make a sleeping bag!                                                                                                                                        Recycling one plastic bottle saves enough energy to turn on a 60-watt lightbulb for three hours.                                                                                                                                                                              We save 17 trees when a tonne of paper is recycled

Once more we collected a huge amount of plastic recyclables this month, brought into school ready to be picked up by Cirplas and Precious Plastic Bangkok.  Thank you to all the students and teachers who continue to bring in recyclables including plastic, card, paper and more!

Remember bringing in recyclables is ongoing so continue to bring in all you can.

We are busy getting ready for this year's Community Service week which will take place in June 2024. The 6th Form  busy planning their English  Camp for the children as well as creating some welcome cards which our Secondary students will compete during  a Community Service lesson.  This month we organised a fundraising event  Build a Tower with Coins, check out which House built the tallest tower below.

One of our ideas for a wall mural. The children from the school will get  an opportunity to help with the painting.   We are sure they will have an enjoyable time.

On Friday 22nd March we held our first "Build a Tower with Coins"  fundraising activity. Our Secondary  students had been saving coins for 3 weeks, in their Houses, and  were looking forward to the challenge.  The towers soon started to take shape  but there were a few collapses, however,  there was plenty of time to start again.  Each House had  students with  steady hands and the time ticked away as the towers  reached their final height.  With  careful measuring, to avoid any other collapses, we  arrived at the final results;  it was close  and Mr. De Smet  announced the results.

In 4th place with a tower height of 14cm was Phoenix house, 3rd place with a tower of height  17.9 cm was Lion house,  2nd place with a tower of height  21.7 cm was Unicorn house and  the winners with a tower of height  22.6 cm was Dragon house.

The event was part of our fundraising for our Community Service project and we thank everyone for taking part.

Dragons were the winning team - well done!

Our thanks to the children in Primary for taking part in the "Build A Tower with Coins" fundraising activity.

On Friday, students from Years 1 to 6 gathered for an exhilarating coin tower competition, infusing the afternoon with joy and creativity. The challenge required participants to plan their structures and exhibit a steady hand as they stacked their coins higher and higher. The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation and excitement, especially during the moments of measuring the towers to discover the tallest creation. Beyond the fun and friendly competition, there was a deeper purpose to the event. All the coins used in building the towers contributed to our fundraising initiative, aimed at supporting Pinkaew School. This activity not only fostered teamwork and precision among our learners but also emphasised the importance of community support and generosity.

Alumni of the month

Gigi Wallace who graduated from RBIS in 2019

During my time at RBIS I was given the necessary skills to excel at University, and the confidence to tackle anything I put my mind to. Through A-levels I learnt to study independently, which gave me the motivation to get work done at University. The courses I took in sixth form were rather broad and well taught by my teachers, allowing me to already have an understanding of most topics covered in academia. On top of this, I believe my education at RBIS has set the grounds for effective learning for the rest of my life. There are lessons that I will never forget. In retrospect, my teachers at RBIS knew me better than I knew myself. All of my teachers were surprised to hear that I wasn’t going straight into art school.

In 2019 I graduated from RBIS with grades high enough to apply for law school. I did so and was accepted into Griffith University’s Bachelor of Law program in 2020, located in Brisbane, Australia (my home-country). I realised law wasn’t an area I had interest in, and the next year I switched to a Bachelor of Visual arts at the Queensland College of Art. This is essentially a degree in fine art, with photography and theory included. Changing to Visual Arts was the best decision I’ve ever made. I would learn about history, philosophy and politics everyday, all through the creation of meaningful art. As my degree progressed I was able to research any topic I wished, from environmental science to Chinese diaspora. I also gained a lot of tacit knowledge that can’t be found through reading. Choosing a major in photography and sculpture minor, I now have basic but helpful skills; patching up walls, ceramic production and developing film photography.

I finished the third and final year of my degree in November 2023, with an outstanding achievement award in the photography major. Like many other careers, it takes enthusiasm to make it far in the art world. As of March 2024 I have been/am going to be featured in 2 magazines, I have been asked by my university and other organisations to do a few artist talks, and I am in the midst of a group exhibition. In order to support my art creation, I do casual work, I have started selling ceramic artworks, and I have started a small business doing boutique nail services from my home studio. As an emerging artist, I look forward to where the future takes me. RBIS incited a real love of academia in me and I am yet to decide on further education through an Honours or Masters program.
