History trip to UN ESCAP (Y.7,8 &9 - 2nd May)
Our Year 7, 8 and 9 students had an incredible humanities trip to the United Nations' Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) on Tuesday the 2nd of May.
The event started with a warm welcome by Ms. Zuo (CKMS) who provided an overview of the United Nations and ESCAP's mission towards sustainable development goals. Following this, Ms. Zanetti and Mr. Mortelliti from the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development team presented an insightful outlook on SDGs in Asia and the Pacific.
Moreover, Ms. Chen, the Associate Economic Affairs Officer from the Environment and Development Division (EDD), briefed our students on the critical relationship between environment and development. Our students were able to learn about the ongoing efforts made by the UN and ESCAP in addressing environmental challenges and fostering sustainable development.
To top it off, our students were able to visit the ESCAP assembly hall, which was a great experience for them. They got to witness first-hand the workings of a major international organization that aims to make a positive impact on the world.
Overall, it was an enriching and informative trip, and we would like to thank the UN and ESCAP for giving our students this incredible opportunity. We are confident that this trip has sparked interest in global issues and inspired our students to work towards a sustainable future.
Art trip to Hua Hin (Y.10,11 &12 - 4th till 7th May)
During the long weekend of 3rd to 7th May 2023, the art students from year 10 and year twelve embarked on an exciting painting trip to Huahin. The main objective of this excursion was to provide the students with a firsthand experience of observing the captivating seaside nature during the early morning, using watercolors as their medium of choice.
We began our artistic adventure on Friday at 6 AM, just as the sun was rising, to capture the enchanting beauty of the majestic sunrise against a backdrop of a clear blue sky. Despite the presence of local tourists in the area, they were all pleasant and unobtrusive, allowing our students to focus on their artwork for a dedicated hour and a half. Due to the high temperatures, we had to conclude our painting session around eight o'clock, but the students later resumed their work in the comfort of their air-conditioned rooms after breakfast.
Later that day, we visited the picturesque "Wat Tham Khao Tao" situated along the rocky beach. This serene location provided various levels adorned with holy deities and monuments, offering our students ample opportunities to sketch and photograph the surroundings. We also took a leisurely stroll along the nearby lake and explored the small markets, where we discovered holy objects and food ingredients.
In the evening, we ventured to the renowned Huahin night market as a group, enjoying an exciting shopping experience and indulging in delectable local delicacies for dinner. The following day, after a refreshing walk in the shallow waters of the sea, we visited a Chinese temple located at the Huahin pier. Seeking respite from the rising temperatures, the temple offered welcome shades and intriguing shadows, allowing our students to capture the folklore-inspired interior and the characteristic sea-themed decorations through sketches and photographs.
As dusk approached, we embarked on a bus journey to the Khaotao temple and monastery. There, we were graciously invited to partake in a chanting and meditation session led by local monks. It proved to be a truly remarkable and spiritual experience. Afterward, we enjoyed a breathtaking seaside walk, taking in the tranquil ambiance of the surroundings. To conclude our adventure, we shared a delightful dinner together at our lovely hotel, reflecting on the unforgettable moments we had experienced throughout the trip.
On the final day, filled with cherished memories of shared activities and new experiences, we embarked on our journey back to Bangkok. We would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in organizing and making this trip possible. It truly exceeded our expectations and will forever remain etched in our hearts as an unforgettable experience.
Biology trip to the Mangrove Forest Conservation Centre in Samut Songkram (Y.9 & 10 - 10th May)
On May 10, our Year 9 and Year 10 students had the unique opportunity to visit the Khlong Khon Mangrove Forest Conservation center in Samut Songkhram!
First, the students took a long-tail boat to sail along Klong Khon canal and discover the mangrove forest. It is a rare, spectacular and prolific ecosystem on the boundary between land and sea. As the students were passing through the narrow channel in the mangroves, they saw many monkeys coming out onto the branches!
Then, the students planted saplings of Rhizophora apiculata (known as Konkang in Thai), a shrub with aerial roots located exclusively in the mangrove ecosystem. It was no easy task! This hands-on activity was an excellent opportunity to get actively involved in the conservation of local ecosystems and biodiversity.
This school trip was part of a cross-curricular and student-led project aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Year 9 and Year 10 students work in teams to prepare an upcoming event at RBIS International School dedicated to Mangroves.

These games not only provided immense enjoyment but also fostered the students' physical well-being, allowing them to simultaneously have fun and enhance their overall fitness levels.
Year 7 Music
This term Y7 music class have been investigating the musical element of 'rhythm'.
Reading musical notation has been an integral role to the rhythm topic and a new concept to most music-makers in the class. They can now identify rhythms visually and aurally.
Rhythms of the Samba band have been our main focus. We have looked at the instruments used, what they sound like and how they are used, the history of the Samba band and how to play the rhythms used during the Carnival festival in Brazil.
Year 8 Art
The year 8 class are participating in the Round Square art competition on the theme "One planet, One future". The students are in the process of creating an imaginary world with creatures inspired by the renowned German biologist Ernst Haeckel. The work below is being made by Davin and Benjamin.
Year 9 Maths
In maths this month we have been working through a unit of work called 3D shapes. To start with we looked at the volume of various prisms including cuboids, triangular prisms and cylinders. We moved onto surface area of prisms which is made easier by looking at nets.
As we are close to the End of Year exams, we used some lessons to recap work from each unit covered during the year. Students were also reminded of exam techniques and the importance of showing clear working out.

Year 10 IGCSE Extended Maths
In this semester, during extended maths, students have been studying the last chapter in the maths IGCSE textbook, “Statistics”. This chapter teaches critical thinking skills such as calculating the probability of an event occurring and analysing graphs. Students have been completing questions from the textbook, along with drawing graphs, and learning how to input the knowledge into our everyday lives by using software like Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets.
After completing this chapter, the chidlren will start doing extended maths past papers as they are taking their exam early, during October of this year. This is so that they can fully focus on learning additional maths during the 2023-2024 academic year.
Example of an exam question:
Jack has won 7 trophies for sport and wants to arrange them on a shelf. He has 2 trophies for cricket, 4 trophies for football and 1 trophy for swimming. Find the number of different arrangements if
there are no restrictions, [1]
the football trophies are to be kept together, [3]
the football trophies are to be kept together and the cricket trophies are to be kept together. [3]
One of the topics is related to the most interesting Number Patterns, which is Pascal's Triangle, named after Blaise Pascal, a famous French Mathematician and Philosopher.
Pascal's Triangle shows us how many ways heads and tails can combine. This can then show us the probability of any combination.
Year 11 PSHE
We had PSHE lessons working on and building skills in memory, confidence and communication with various interactive activities which all Y11 pupils took part in.
Improving memory and communication skills is crucial for PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic education) as it enhances cognitive abilities and overall learning which students can utilise in the real world.
Activities that focus on memory, such as memory matching or recall exercises, can help students develop concentration, attention to detail, and recall abilities. These skills support effective communication, an important part of education, by enabling students to remember and understand important information, engage in meaningful discussions, and express their thoughts accurately.
Additionally, enhanced memory skills and communication with confidence contribute to problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking, empowering students to make informed choices in various PSHE contexts, such as health and financial education which Y11 students can link to their business subject.
By incorporating memory-improving games into PSHE curricula, educators can create engaging and interactive learning experiences that enhance students' cognitive abilities and equip them with valuable communication skills for their personal and social development.
Year 12/13 HSD English
Over the past few months our HSD Year 12 and 13 students have been engaged in a variety of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing skills based around IELTS examinations. These four corners of English literacy are essential in preparing our students for their future within further and higher education as they seek to gain entrance to universities and colleges whilst nearing the end of their voyage within secondary education.
Last week found our intrepid class pushing their vocal skills to the limit as they took turns swapping roles as both speaker and examiner in a mock-style speaking test. The participants completed a 'concentric circles' style exercise in which they were able to vocalise both questions and answers amongst a revolving variety of peers within the High School Diploma classroom.
Year 13 A Level Maths
The examination is a common thing that we all have faced in our life. It might be the examination in school, colleges, entrance, competitions, etc. These examinations help us in evaluating our knowledge and potential. We cannot escape from this and therefore always be ready to face it with good preparation to become successful in life.
This is what a pupil at RBIS writes about approaching higher level mathematics during her A – Level studies and preparation for the exams at school.
“Math is a subject that requires diligent practice. A level Math, as a year 13, has become quite a challenge overtime, but through the assistance provided and the detailed reviewing, it has become a lot easier to get through. At times there are still hurdles to overcome during learning, but practicing and using resources has always proven to make it easier to overcome.”
HOUSES @ RBIS
4 houses
The RBIS Houses are designed to embody the values and ethos of our school and are an integral part of our school community.
Our Houses' main aim is to provide every student in each house with a sense of belonging within the school community, opportunities to develop social, intellectual, physical and practical skills, a sense of achievement both inside and outside of the classroom including through the fun and excitement of inter-house competitions.
Students are assigned to one of our four Houses when they join the EY, Primary or Secondary sections of the school; entering a system which is designed to develop an awareness of individual and collective responsibility and opportunities for student leadership. Each house has two designated elected House Captains (Primary and Secondary) who will act as representatives for all the students in their house throughout the year by: helping coordinate house teams, organise activities and events and represent their house at relevant meetings.

Secondary students took part in two exciting art projects this month.
Year 10 students created mural pieces for the wall mural of Newcastle Grammar School in Australia. Students from around the world are contributing their artwork and ideas of what "perspective" means to them. Contributing schools will receive a copy of the final mural piece - in the hope that this collaboration can unite young people in their quest for a shared perspective. Our students' perspective was based on their Hua Hin art trip with Mr Sein.
Bianca from year 10 says: "We had the honour of partaking in an eye-opening 4 day trip to HuaHin. There, we were inspired by the peaceful and vibrant atmosphere that the beach had to offer. Throughout the 4 days, hours of early morning painting were completed, sitting near the coastline, and we were able to produce four pieces of artwork, inspired by the beauty of one of Thailand’s most beautiful destinations."
The second was a competition organized by Chittagong Grammar School (Bangladesh) around the theme "One Planet, One Future". This included an online trivia game to help students learn about environmental issues, as well as an art competition. Once again, Mr. Sein guided the art students into preparing some fantastic entries. We eagerly await the results, and want to acknowledge the efforts and hard work of all the students who submitted entries.
Community Service (May)
Sixth Form Community Service Residential
June 19th to June 23rd 2023
This year our 6th Form will travel to Pinkaew School in Ayutthaya for their Community Service residential. The school was recently affected by the floods and is in need of assistance to repair their facilities and provide resources for their students.
When we visited the school we decided that a suitable project would be to renovate two classrooms - our 6th form students will do the painting and with help also tile the floors. The 6th form students would also like to create the RBIS reading corner in the library with a carpet area and bean bags and/or cushions. This would be an area that the children at the school could enjoy the pleasure of reading. We have already started to collect books and our total has already reached over 300 books.
We need the support of the RBIS community to help us carry out our project. We have started to hold fund - raising events which will help us buy materials and other items to help the school. How can you help? - see below
As you can see the rooms are in need of renovation. There are some books in the library but no reading area which is why our 6th form would like to provide this for the children.
On Friday, 19th May, from 14:05 until 14:45, our students from Year 6 to Year 13 eagerly participated in the Jog-A-Thon. Each student ran or walked the number of laps that their parents decided upon, or for those who selected "unlimited," they went all out and gave it their absolute best. The energy and enthusiasm were truly inspiring!
We are proud to share that this event was held in support of our 6th Form Community Service project, benefiting Pinkaew School in Ayutthaya. Pinkaew School was recently affected by floods, and they need our assistance to repair their facilities and provide resources for their students. By participating in the Jog-A-Thon, we aimed to raise 22,000 baht, which, combined with other funds raised, will help us carry out this important project.
We want to give a huge shout-out to all our students for their incredible efforts, determination, and commitment. Your dedication to making a positive impact is truly commendable!
We would also like to congratulate the top three students who ran the greatest number of laps during the Jog-A-Thon.
In third place, receiving a well-deserved bronze medal, we have Toey, who completed an impressive 42 laps!
Securing second place and earning a fantastic silver medal is Davin, who ran an outstanding 55 laps!
And drumroll, please... Our champion, taking home the gold medal, is New! With an incredible feat, New ran an astonishing 60 laps!
Thank you to all the parents, teachers, and our Head Prefect Kenny who supported and encouraged our students throughout the Jog-A-Thon. Together, we have made a difference and brought us closer to achieving our fundraising goal.
Let's keep up the momentum as we continue to support Pinkaew School and positively impact lives. Stay tuned for more updates and exciting events in the future!
Early Years and Primary are collecting books and cushions for 6th Form Community Service project. Secondary collected 350 books during Book Week and we appreciate the support of the children and their parents in Primary and Early Years as we add more books to our collection. The cushions and beanbags will provide comfortable seating for the children and the ideal setting for reading.
The idea of a Reading Corner came from our 6th Form students and they are really excited by the progress we are making. We look forward to seeing the reaction of the children at Pinkaew School when it is complete and they are able to read books in a comfortable environment.
As you are aware RBIS International School has a partnership with 'Precious Plastic Bangkok' in collaboration with 'CirPlas' Thailand's leading waste management company. This month we had our second "pick up" when we handed over plastic water bottles, plastic cups, plastic cutlery, plastic bags, plastic yogurt cartons, plastic meal containers and more. We also handed over more plastic bottle tops for Precious Plastic. Many of our Secondary students are regularly bringing in recyclables so they can be reused or recycled.
We also had other items such as card, paper and milk containers which were collected by our local saleng driver.
Some of the other recyclables students are bringing to school - many students are now bringing in recyclables on a regular basis. As well as receiving Community Service points students can also earn House points for items they bring to school.

Alumni of the month
Benyaporn (Bam) Chantana who graduated from RBIS in 2007.
I joined RBIS in its very early days. After 10 years at RBIS, I went on to pursue a degree in Economics from Chulalongkorn University (EBA). After graduation, I joined the Bank of Thailand (BOT), the central bank and financial regulator of all banks in Thailand. I was then granted a full scholarship by the BOT for my Master’s degree in Applied Economics at the University of Michigan, USA.
After my return, I worked at the BOT as an analyst in the Financial Institution Policy Group. In this role, I was actively involved in formulating policies to regulate banks’ businesses and was also responsible for approving their new financial products and services. Later, I joined the BOT’s International Department as an Economist, where I worked as a negotiator for Thailand’s international trade agreements concerning financial and economic policies.
To further broaden my horizons, I recently embarked on a new journey as an Economist at the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO). It is an international organization based in Singapore, serving as the regional macroeconomic surveillance unit for the ASEAN+3 region, comprising ASEAN, China, Japan, and Korea.
Here at AMRO, I have found a platform to leverage my experience in banking regulations and economic policy analysis. I get to travel across the region to conduct economic surveillance, engage with key policymakers and central bankers to provide policy advice to member economies. I take pride in being able to help identify potential economic risks and challenges to the ASEAN+3 region while also assisting international policymakers in devising effective strategies to ensure the resilience and stability of the ASEAN+3 economies.
Looking back, I am grateful for the education and experiences I gained throughout the 10 years I spent at RBIS. I believe the intimate learning environment, combined with the personalized attention from my teachers, provided the groundwork I needed for my academic pursuits, sparked my interest in economics, and also prepared me to work in a dynamic and multinational environment at an international organization such as AMRO.
ECA Focus
Board Games Club
There are countless advantages to playing board games both competitively and collaboratively. Not only do board games offer a fun way to pass the time, but they also promote mental and social stimulation. Playing games can help develop critical thinking, strategic planning, and arithmetic skills. Furthermore, these games can foster healthy competition, teaching young people how to win and lose gracefully.
Collaborative games offer their own advantages. They can encourage teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. These games often require players to work together to achieve a common goal, teaching valuable life skills such as cooperation and compromise.
One game that has recently gained popularity and we love to play during our ECA is "The Mind." This game is a collaborative card game in which players must work together to play cards in ascending order without communicating with each other. It's a game that requires players to intuitively understand their fellow players and is a great exercise in empathy and emotional intelligence.

2023 Awards & Graduation Ceremony
Wednesday 28th June 1-3PM
The Awards and Graduation Ceremony is a momentous occasion in the academic calendar as we gather together to celebrate the achievements and successes of our talented students. It is a time to recognize their hard work, dedication, and growth throughout the year.
The ceremony will take place at the Bangkok Arts & Culture Centre (BACC), a renowned venue that showcases the artistic achievements of our vibrant community. Prior to the commencement of the ceremony, we invite you to explore the RBIS Secondary art exhibition, which will be located just outside the auditorium. The exhibition will display the exceptional artwork produced by our talented students during terms 2 and 3. It is an excellent opportunity to witness their creativity and applaud their artistic endeavors.
To ensure a memorable experience, we will be providing beverages and snacks for your enjoyment after the event. Additionally, there will be photo opportunities available, allowing you to capture special moments with your child and fellow parents.
